lenovo 3000 :unable to reinstall xp from service partition

#1 Post by okhungli » Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:45 am

There are viruses in my laptop and I tried to get rid of them by reinstalling xp from scratch. I follow the instructions by pressing the "lenovo care" button during powering up.

It didn't work. The screen paused awhile and continued to start up XP from c drive.

I don't have the XP CDs and my warranty has expired.
What options do I have?
Urgent help will be appreciated, thanks.

I believe you can purchase Restore CDs from Lenova. If you can disable the wireless and get the laptop booted you might be able to get to the Lenova Care and burn the Restore CDs, providing that have not already been burnt. Lenova only allows the user to burn 1-set of Restore CDs. Barring that you could get an OEM XP CD and reinstall from it using the COA on the bottom of the system.

I disabled wireless and got into Lenovo Care, but there's no "burn resore cd". Anything wrong with my "lenovo care"?

It's unclear from your post whether you're performing the procedure from Windows or inside from the service partition.

To create a set of Product Recovery disks you need to be in Windows and do the following:

Click Start > All Programs > Lenovo Care and then click Create Recovery Media.

Also see if one of the following applies to you:
lenovo wrote:The create recovery discs function may be affected by changing the partition status in the hard drive or upgrading the system recovery program. Thus, you may not be able to use or to run the create recovery discs function in an original default factory version. See the following cases to get help.

Case 1:

If your ThinkPad has been upgraded to use ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 but there is no “Create Recovery Media” function in the path as stated in Step 1 in this document, you may need to reinstall the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 program again. The program can be downloaded from http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/think/thinkvan ... pport.html .

Case 2:

You are not able to create the Recovery Discs in your current windows system in the following situations.
- Created one set of recovery discs already.
- Partitioned the hard drive.
- Deleted the original system recovery hidden partition.
If you tried to boot from a Windows CD then the boot sector could've corrupted in that process.

You can repair it via the following package as long as the service partition is healthy and still intact on your machine:

Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette.

You'll need a floppy disk drive. The package is coded for to be used with a FDD and I don't know how to make it work through another device like bootable CD or USB, this is the question I receive in pm almost everytime after mentioning it so I thought it would be good to admit before someone asks it, again.

I finally have this resolved by creating "restore CDs".
The option isn't available in the "Lenovo Care" as documented in the user's manual. It is available in the "ThinkVantage" program!!
