Left Nav mouse button popped off

#1 Post by DrSmile » Mon Nov 22, 2004 11:48 pm

I looked pretty carefully at the key and nothing appears broken, is there a clip or something that's supposed to hold it on? This is on a T40.

It's a very annoying problem as the key will pop up slightly every time I click a link and shift enough not to work the next time I try to depress it...

Feeling the action of the button, and looking at your picture, it seems there is a pin that runs across the top of the button, the side opposite the red line.

I don't know though...

1. call ibm:
2. "my keyboard sucks and broke"
3. new keyboard overnighted if possible
4. enjoy

As funny as it sounds, I have to agree with gruen. Just call them and tell them it may sound ridiculous, but sh*t is popping off your keyboard.

Keys click in place, and I've never had a computer that didn't have one pop off at some point. Before you put them and you out to a lot of work, why not try putting it where it belongs, slide it around a bit until it feels like it's in the right place, and see if pushing down very firmly clicks it back on. If it doesn't, nothing lost. On my T41 the spacebar popped off after about two weeks, seven or eight months ago; I put it back, and not a thing has happened since.

I of course tried to put it back, it would not stay on.

I called IBM and they DHLed me a new keyboard overnight. The old keyboard was made in China, this one is made in Thailand. There are some threads in this forum about the differences, I certainly prefer the new Thai one as it feels more sturdy.

Looking at the new and old mouse buttons there appears to be no part missing or broken, it seems to be a manufacture defect of the key tabs not properly lining up with the tabs on the substructure or more likely the tabs flexed over time with use. I may try to glue the key to the actuator so I can keep the keyboard as a spare.

Thanks for all the help and hats off to IBM's overnight service.

Oh yeah. Takes about 2 minutes. 5 for a first timer working very carefully.

IBM referred me to this helpful link, I wish I had it when I was adding memory.

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... &loc=en_US

Lots of install info there.

same problem

#10 Post by dabrooks » Wed Nov 24, 2004 12:28 pm

I have the same exact problem with the mouse keys...although both popped off. I tried for a while to fit the key into a groove, but it would never stick. So when I take my laptop on the road and open the top I always find the keys just sitting on my keybaord. Pretty annoying!

Also my number 1 key is sticking now and doesn't work occasionally.

I will IBM and see what they say.
