Updates from Lenovo or Microsoft

I have a T60, with Lenovo installed Vista Ultimate. I have some questions about the differences in updates from Lenovo and Microsoft. Does it matter whether I install the updates for Modem and Intel Lan ABG from one vs the other or are they the same. In general is there a feeling that uploading from one place is better than the other? I also had a couple of questions about whether I should update the system backup drivers that is on the Lenovo site, but says that if you have Vista preloaded, you don't need them --- is there any reason why I can't or shouldn't install them even though my Vista was installed by Lenovo?
