Wireless Wake on LAN with Vista on T42p and R51...Possible?

#1 Post by PeteS457 » Tue Jan 15, 2008 12:54 pm

Hi all. I have a desktop in my study and two Thinkpads - a T42p and a R51 - running wirelessly throughout the house, all running Vista. I typically have set the Thinkpads to sleep after a certain amount of idle time (3 hours I think). Can they be woken up via Wake on LAN from other parts of the house so I can use Remote Desktop? (I have a vertical home and it would cut down on my running up and down stairs.) Thanks in advance.

WakeOnLan is set in your BIOS, so yes, you can.

http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/w ... 025329.htm

Intel says it only works on their Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection and Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN cards.

WoWLAN is what's needed, and it has to be supported by the card and the BIOS. Part of the WiFi card would have to be on all the time, or periodically, using precious battery life.

I would be surprised if ThinkPads support WoWLAN. It could mean turning on a moving machine, something they VERY much want to avoid.

I don't think we've seen definitive word on whether it is supported, but I don't ever remember seeing it mentioned WRT ThinkPads.

I don't know the ins and outs of it, but I guess a TP in a docking station should support it.
Another question is, if your router supports it!
