Access Connections failing

#1 Post by drschwartz » Wed Jan 16, 2008 11:55 am

I have a new, refurbished T41 I bought from IBM. It came with XP SP1.
After upgrading to SP2, Access Connections no longer works. It results
in the following error:
"The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application
will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:
\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occurpied an address range reserved for
Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted
for a new DLL."
Well, since it's a refurbished machine, IBM only wants to talk about
hardware, not software issues. I've downloaded and run 7mcn38ww.exe
which is the latest Access Connections install file from Lenovo but
with the same result as described above.
Any thoughts what I can do to get Access Connections running
properly?!?
TIA
David

T41, T43, T61; all running XP SP2

There could be a problem with the machine (in which case Lenovo should take it back).

Otherwise, recent versions of Access Connections work just fine with SP2. Generally, with laptops, I found that going to SP2 meant updating the network, wireless, sound, video and mouse drivers, and even the chipset drivers.

So you can try uninstalling Access Connections completely including profiles, re-booting, and then updating the NIC and Wireless drivers to the current version.

I also found the AC V4.41 works a bit better for me than V4.42.

You need to update SP2 with all critical updates:

Certain programs may not start, and you receive an error message on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2: "Illegal System DLL Relocation".
Microsoft wrote:Symptoms of the problem

Certain programs may not start after you install security update 925902 (MS07-017) and security update 928843 (MS07-008) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additionally, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

application_executable_name - Illegal System DLL Relocation

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL

You don't need Access Connections. Windows already has the ability to manage connections, and there is really no added benefit to the Lenovo software.

The Windows XP connection capability (its hardly a connection "manager" by any measure) only does a fraction of what a real conection manager, such as Access Connections, is able to do.

I never received or noticed any benefit from the software, quite the opposite in fact. My connections are much more stable now without it.

I'm with pailhead on this one. I used AC for several years and always had some level of network connection problems. When I got rid of it and used Windows to do the connections I found it works faster without any bugs and without any attention from me. AC may have more potential but for me in my applications simpler has turned out better.

some of the thinkpad utilitys just dont work with sp-2. i have had 2
problems. the first time i got your same error, because i installed the program in my "D" drive partition. when i re-installed it in my
"c" drive, it woked fine. the other thinkpad i could not get the utility to work. the pentium based motherboards seem to be more
sensitive to these problems. my 240 celeron never had a problem.
it also would be a good idea to update to the most current bios,
down load and install the o/s support files from lenovo, get all the
updates from microsoft, and try again. good luck, adrian
