Thinkpad questions

#1 Post by FrontierDriver » Tue Nov 23, 2004 10:00 am

I am considering purchasing a Thinkpad. I've had several Dell laptops and all of them have had problems right out of the box. The latest one I have is an 8600. The graphics and 15.4" widescreen are just awesome and I think I will really miss it.

How good are the graphics on the 2378-FVU?? Are they bright and sharp enough? If it was blurry I think that would drive me crazy.

Are there any weird noises like beeping sounds when maximizing/minimizing windows in programs like Internet Explorer?? Is the fan loud?? I've read where it runs alot on Thinkpads.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't have experience with that specific model, but I can virtually guarantee that once you "see the light" and move to a ThinkPad you'll be very impressed.

LCDs on Dells, ThinkPads and most other computers are made by the same few companies, so there pretty much the same thing. I've never been disappointed by a ThinkPad display.

Overall, I think you'll really like the jump not only in construction quality but the fact that IBM actually attaches decent customer support to their products.

I've seen these weird noises like when maximizing/minimizing in every laptop I had, HP, IBM, Acer and Sony Vaio. I think is something to do with the video card and the speakers.

isnt that just one of the sounds in the profile, if you goto control panel/sounds and set the sound scheme to "no sounds" --are the sounds still there when you minimize/maximize?

I have a 2378-FVU and it's awesome. SXGA+ screen is very nice and crisp. It's as bright as I would ever need it.

As for the beeping sounds, I really am not sure what you're talking about. Mine has never made strange beeps.

The computer is SILENT when on battery power. It really doesn't make a sound at all when the fan is not on. On battery, the fan rarely comes on.

On AC, the fan can be on almost all the time depending on your settings.

Even when it's on all the time though, you can barely hear it if there is anything else going on in the room.

Overall it's an extremely quiet computer.

The graphics seem to be fine as well. I don't play games much, but the demo for Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 ran well, and everything looked great. No ghosting that I noticed or anything like that.

Great computer overall. My next notebook in a few years will UNDOUBTEDLY be a ThinkPad.

I think I know what FrontDriver is talking about since I've heard these sounds before too. They are really weird and only happen when you move, minimize or maximize the window with animation. It's a high pitch fuzzy interference sound sometimes not notciable.

I have 2378 FVU model. I love it very much. The LCD screen is crisp, but too bright for me. It's better to adjust one level down. The graphic card works well. I installed two games: Tiger Woods Golf 2004 and Need For Speed Hot Persuit 2. Both generate smooth graphs and there is no delay. The color is vivid too. Some games don't support ATI Mobility card such as Microsoft's Age of Mythology.

Generally speaking, I have no problems playing games in T42 2378 FVU. It is a quite PC, very slient when using battery. You won't be disappointed by choosing this model.

Sometimes they do after installing Omega or DNA drivers. If you really want to play a game that doesn't run, it's worth a try.

I just contacted the Education section about buying a Thinkpad. The Rep was very rude and not helpful at all. This is very discouraging. I would report him if I could find the right phone # or email to do so. I am gonna have to think long and hard about buying from IBM now.

Don't let one rep for a company with thousands of employees effect your decision. Go with the Thinkpad, you simply will not be disappointed (or if you are, they will replace it within 30 days no questions asked). I had read a few comments here and there about the ThinkPad display not being bright or crisp enough, and I have not experienced this at all. It is great, and as Plinkerton said, nearly silent when running on battery!

The graphics on the 2378 would depend on the card that comes with it. I've got the ATI 9600, I haven't tried any games yet but have not been disappointed with simple imaging.

You shouldn't be hearing noises when maximizing/minimizinf Internet Explorer; simple, you should be using Firefox 8)

The fan is not loud at all. Then again, I don't use mine as a desktop replacement so I don't tend to leave it plugged in and turned on all day, at the most 2-3 hours at a time for me. The quality should be much better than the Dell... good luck with your decision.
