Short of buying a new keyboard...

#1 Post by BillD » Thu Jan 17, 2008 2:47 pm

I'm just throwing this out there because I'm pretty sure I'll have to buy a new keyboard but I want advice from the experts here..

I have a 600e with the trackpoint 8611 error. It's a barebone system right now but I want to fix it up and use it as a spare..

Here's there problem. I can NOT get into the easy setup( bios) menu so I can hack the Bios and get rid of the 8611 error.. I've done a search here, and tried everything. Holding the F1 key...Pushing it repeatedly, removing all hardware, etc...

I always use an external mouse, I hate the trackpoints and pads so I'm going to really hate it if I have to buy a new keyboard for a trackpoint I'll never use...

So is there anything I am missing to either a) get into the Bios so I can hack it or B) install Windows with the 8611 error so I can get to the IBM utility and turn off the trackpoint..

Thx

Was there ever a bios password on this machine? Are you getting a small pictogram with a lock beside it on boot-up?

That is the correct way to access the BIOS. Prior to sliding the power switch, press and hold the F1 key. Power up the system, still keeping the key down. Wait until the Easy Setup screen appears. If this does not work and you are not getting the previously mentioned "lock" icon, then you may have more than a problem with the trackpoint on your keyboard; the connection from the keyboard to the sub card maybe be the issue. I'd try re-seating the ribbon cable before purchasing anything.

Actually a couple of years ago I used this computer for awhile. So there's no PW lock on the Bios, and I did have the 8611 hacked out. How it's come back I have NO idea...

I also took it apart yesterday and reset the keyboard.. All the keys on the keyboard work....

One thing I am going to try is I have a couple other HDD's with Windows already loaded on them. The HDD I have in it now is blank, and with the 8611 error I can't get Windows loaded... I'm going to try sliding in these other HDD and see if it will boot to Windows. Then try to disable the trackpoint that way....

Fingers crossed...

I got to go buy a lottery ticket..

One of those HDD's had XP on it..Amazingly it loaded without a BSOD, and I disabled the trackpoint..Re-booted and it worked..
