Need an Adapter / Charger for Use on a Plane

#1 Post by doylnea » Thu Jan 17, 2008 6:38 pm

A friend has an X41 that he's taking on an international flight. He'd like to be able to use his X41 on the flight and not run out of battery midflight. Can anyone suggest an adapter that he'd be able to use to power his laptop during the flight?

Thanks!

Depending on his air carrier, his seat might, or might not, have a 12 volt outlet like a car cigarette lighter. If he's in FIRST CLASS he's almost sure to have one at his seat. If he's in coach, it may be several rows away. Best to check with the airline. I fly almost exclusively on American and their web site has diagrams of which rows in coach have power outlets. A regular automobile DC converter works for me; the same one I use in car rentals for my laptop/GPS. Some carriers use a different power outlet than the one you find in automobiles, but I don't know which ones are different.

The tabook reference says that the X41 uses the 72 watt AC/DC combo adapter FRU 73P4485. Your friend should be able to use the bigger version, FRU 22P9003. The DC power connection looks like a standard cigarette lighter plug. However, if you pull the end of it apart, you get a Empower jack, which is also used in airplanes. As RRHODY noted, not all coach seats will have outlets but First and Business class should. Contact the airline to find out or consult something like http://www.seatguru.com for information.

Thanks all. I know UAL uses something called em-power, but I don't know what his carrier is yet, so I'll have to check with him to confirm.
