PCMCIA video card to sove video card solder issue?

#1 Post by eddiearniwhatever » Thu Jan 17, 2008 11:38 pm

My T40 video card has the cracked solder issue. I did put some pieces of paper on top of the card, as suggested on the thinkwiki forum, and this worked for a few months, but the problem is returning. I don't think I can solve it without replacing the system board.

My question is, can I bypass that card entirely by putting in a PCMCIA video card? Would that work? And, if so, can anyone suggest one which might work well with Linux (Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon)?

thanks

The purpose of the PCMCIA slot is to gain access to the laptop's PCI bus. I don't think you could gain access to the internal DVI cable itslef - it's attached to the Radeon chip only. PCMCIA Video cards are, as far as I know, made with DVI/VGA out, for use with external monitors.
And even if you gain access to the DVI cable - you can't disable the integrated graphics, so the answer to your question is "No".
