transfer of drive from x31 (2673) to (2672 3UU)

Hi

since my x31 is now dead, I bought what I understand to be as close as possible to the existing machine config. I have heaps installed on this little bugger and don't want to be (in fact the install disks are in another continent from where I am now) reinstalling much.

OS is win2000 SP4 (as I've not bothered to risk my working machine on any upgrades to XP). I've used drive snapshot to snapshot the disk to an external 500GB drive, so I don't really mind inserting causes some / requires some duffing the installed image.

My plan is to remove the 100G 5400 from my dead x31 and slip it into the new one. (I asked a question on a previous thread about the possibility of this being the cause of my problems)

Looking at the lenovo site, it would seem that my two sticks of 512 can also be moved (PC-2700 333Mhz iirc) directly to the new box (which only has 256)

The new machine has the security stuff, which I know nothing about. Will I require any drivers or stuff for this?
Can I simply deactivate this in BIOS?
Is it handy??

Finally if anyone has any 'experience' on this which they think I might benefit from I'd be keen to hear.

Thanks heaps
Chris Eastwood

You should be able to easily put it in the new one. Maybe load a driver or two for the new stuff.

I have moved drives a number of times between X series machines, and also to a T23 with no problems. Since you have two very similar X31's, you may need no or very few driver updates. The "new" machine should boot with no problems. You may need a driver for the wireless if it's a differenht card. You can just not turn on the Security chip, that's what I would recommend, it is not worth the trouble for normal users.

You can also move the RAM from the old one into the new one. FYI, any X31 will take up to 2Gb PC2100 or 2700 RAM, but 1Gb should be OK for normal daily use.
