ThinkVantage Device Configuration->display settings disab

#1 Post by McMains » Fri Jan 18, 2008 11:15 am

I have a brand new R61 (8932CTO), Windows Vista, and enhanced port replicator. All was well until I used the Thinkvantage Productivity Center->Device configuration->Select Display settings to create a new display profile to run when the R61 was docked. In doing so, I saw the option to specify the function of the fn-f7 key and set it to alternate between the default LCD profile and the new profile I had just created - This seemed like a handy feature and I selected it, believing that all I was doing was controlling the function of the fn+f7 key! What I subsequently discovered is that this also set the function performed when the above Thinkvantage->device config->select Disp settings is selected to do the same profile swap - that is, I can no longer get into to manage or edit display profiles or change the fn-f7 function! I called Lenovo service and was told me that I had to call in for, and pay for, software service. When I complained, they gave me links for two downloads to try - 7kkd03ww (keyboard customizer utility) and 7rua05ww (Presentation Director) and then wished me "good luck". The readme's for these programs, however, indicate I need a later version of the power management driver than what I have installed, a version of a Hotkey Features option that doesn't appear to be installed at all, ...,etc. I'm hesitant to start uninstalling/installing these things for fear of getting into problems even worse than what I have. Is there really no way to just reset this apparently bad configuration choice (registry edit, ??) other than replacing multiple software components! If not, what a terrible design!

Display settings disabled

#2 Post by McMains » Tue Feb 19, 2008 11:25 am

Since, after weeks, there have been zero replies to this question, posted in two different forums, I'm forced to conclude that it must not be a very interesting question, or that I have not framed it appropriately. It's important to me, however. I find it inexplicable that a simple configuration menu selection in an application provided with my ThinkPad can really result in total loss of the function with no way to back out the choice. Could anyone at least offer suggestions of alternative (to this forum) sources of information (other than Lenovo, who only seem interested in selling me a software service package) that I might be able to pursue?

Thanks very much

Hello, First, try to run "Thinkpad configuration" and select display setting and presentation director there can be the Fn+F7 behavior set, I also recommend installing the lenovo think vantage system update, and update all stuff to the latest version, And if above fails, try to uninstall the presentation director and install it again.

I have R40, but with latest lenovo tools installed, I suppose that it will look similar on your R61.
X60t - 3GB RAM, 60GB HDD, currently no battery, SXGA+
X61t - 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 1 hour battery, SXGA+ with bubbles
T530 - i7-3630QM, 16GB RAM, 240+480GB SSDs, 3G, Full HD LCD, 9 cell battery

Thank you very much for you help. I had previously gotten a number of program updates from Lenovo, and your posting prompted me to go back and explore the Presentation Manager again (not used when I got into this problem) and indeed, this time it ran successfully and had an option to reset the fn-F7 function. Again, thank you very much
