Which bits of Thinkpad software can I safely remove

#1 Post by umern » Sat Jan 19, 2008 4:37 am

Has anyone posted a definitive list of what bits of IBM software can be safely removed if I want to improve startup times etc.
I have a Z60T and dont need any of the security stuff or fingerprint reader etc.
Just using the PC at home to surf the net, edit photos etc with a Wired and Wireless connection. Quite happy to let Windows manage the network connections etc.

I know I could do a clean install of XP but dont fancy the hassle...

Thanks..

it depends on a person....
I removed the following:
- messenger
- away manager
- thinkvantage update (or system update or both don't remember)
- client security solution
- private disk
- software installer
furthermore I would highly recommand removing the following:
- anything that has "google" in it
- anything that has "norton" in it
however... before you remove anything make sure you have a back up (on CDs or DVDs).
additional things that you can do:
-turn off system restore (again make sure you keep up with your back ups)
-turn off all animations and eye candy
-turn off indexing
after you do the above your computer should start up in ~1min or even less...
