Hi,
I PM'd Zender something like week ago, but I am sure man is busy enough to answer endless bios requests.
So, if someone can PM me the link for his bios for X41 type 2525 I will be very thankful,
Great community out there!

Re: ThinkPad BIOS whitelist (error 1802/1804) *READ 1st MSG*
Hello everyone. I have some interesting information regarding a recent upgrade I attempted. I have a 3 year old T61 and she is still going strong. I added a MC8765 a year ago and have gradually been adding/upgrading components to keep it modern. So far I have reworked everything except the screen, cpu, and graphics. Screen's yellowing so that might come up for upgrade soon. So anyhow, I had the BIOS mod working and was perfectly happy with my 8765 for a few months but it was a bit sluggish at times and the lack of range was getting to me. Also the fact that i was without voice while surfing on the go was causing issues when people wanted to talk to me. So after a HDD upgrade and 4GB of ram, I decided to buy a new WWAN card. Made sense since I updated the WLAN to an Intel Ult-N 6300 this summer. I picked out an MC8795V and ordered it form Richardson Electronics (the only US supplier I could find that actually sold the cards to consumers). Lady emails me and says 9 week lead time. I look at the part list and see the 8790V for cheaper plus it was shipping now. Jumped on it. It is in the laptop now after some hassle. Here's are bit of interesting data I have seen on this card,
Install: Very frustrating. Sierra Wireless has taken a policy of OEM suppliers giving out custom drivers, and no longer allows the general public to download drivers, especially for the new AirPrime MC series. In addition, because of an apparent issue in the way they designed the pins on the mini-pcie card pin 22 permanently holds your device in low power mode on certain motherboards, namely the T61 (needs verification though). Taping pin 22 worked for me. Drivers can be obtained from the Sierra Wireless 3G Watcher (v 3.X, the last downloadable one...). I was able to get the card working intermittently but got good speed figures off it. Now all I have to do is hack it the access connections .dll's.
I tried using the posts on this forum in the past with a few mods to no avail. When editing both Acon.dll and ACAdapterInfo.dll, I used the VID of 1199 (default Sierra) and the PID of 683c (confirmed MC9790V) for both of the pairs in each file. Does not do a thing for me and my suspicion lies in the fact that Lenovo stops using sierra at the 8775. Tried those drivers and got nowhere. So I have a completely usable WWAN card, but its in a constant radio off state. Short of a few blinks during POST which is normal, I lose the light at windows load. Furthermore the only way to hinge it on is to rip out the card, reboot, insert my old 8765, power that radio on, rip that out while running (not happy doing it) and plug in the 8790V, which works until reboot. This would be fine but I don't want to rip the laptop apart each time I want to use my WWAN card...
Steps To use MC8790V:
1. Flash with Zender's BIOS
2. Insert new card with pin 22 taped over, otherwise stays in a constant and useless low power mode, with -30 C temps and a scary pcie bus voltage Critical high readout (Open AT data)
3. Install drivers from 3G watcher
4. Fix AC dll's to allow radio operation
5. Figure out why there is no GPS (thinking driver)...Has Qualcomm GPSone/standalone chip onboard...
6. Enjoy card maybe make some phone calls...
Sorry for the long post. Wanted to get all the info out there so my hours of searching are not repeated by someone else.
Any one have any ideas that might help? Think taping pin 20 would fix it? I could use device manager to enable disable the WWAN?

In the T60 BIOS, there is also a check against another 'whitelist', which controls whether the card is connected to the hardware wireless switch.
If it does not pass the test, it will put a "radio disable" signal onto pin 20.
Assuming that T60 and T61 are very similar in this respect, if you tape pin 20 as well, it will probably work.

Thanks for the help!!!
Taping pin 20 worked. Just two more outstanding things. First when I try using the voice features like making a phone call through both watcher and sierra's developer studio, the screen goes gray but the call goes through. My laptop ends up in an unresponsive state though. Then I need to figure out the Qualcomm GPS setup. My hunch for the voice is to try without having my data connection active. I am thinking the card does not allow simultaneous voice/data connections.
Any one have any ideas on this?
EDIT: The GPS fix is simply an unspecified AT command of a firmware fix. They have a program out on the web to enable gps on USB cards but it practically bricked my card trying it on it. I had to pull it out, retape it, and cross my fingers. It works fine now though. I got a case open with sierra wireless. Hopefully they will respect the fact that I have a card and give me some info on it. Worst case I have to leverage my position at a software engineering company. It is how I got the developer suite... That will be sure to get me some tech support.

^^^ Wrong, tried it recently and it still went unresponsive. It is scary since it looks like my gpu artifacts in the process. Sounds like it is impinging another bus or memory instance. As usual windows logs are not picking up the error. Funniest part is the call goes through. Maybe it is a sound issue? Anyone know how these cards handle audio I/O? I read it was something to do with the PCI bus?I am thinking the card does not allow simultaneous voice/data connections.

Hello!
I have a T60p (2623-DDU) and a X61T (7749-CTO). Would anyone please be so kind as to PM me the magical Zender BIOS files and instructions on how to use them? I tried sending a PM to Zender but they did not even leave my PM outbox - guess his inbox must be pretty full!
Thanks,
Carver

From the posts near the end it seems that the great Zender has left us. In that case I'd like to make a plea to the board:
If ANYONE has a copy of the hacked BIOS for the thinkpad R61 that will help me get rid of this fracking error and save some money, I would greatly appreciate a link. I have tried my own mod, and failed, much to my chagrin...
Edit: I would like to thank the members of this board for quick responses. My BIOS is now modded and I'm happily using my new intel 5100. You guys rock!

If i remember, these BIOS where located on Zender's website, i don't have the address though, so all we need would be it...
Re: ThinkPad BIOS whitelist (error 1802/1804) *READ 1st MSG*
hmmm, from what I can divine from this forum, Zender personally distributed the bioses to people, once they had PM'ed him.
Although, recently, he seems to be no longer available. I can't find any website that he used to distribute them from.
So, if anyone has a bios for the X61 they received, I would be very grateful to receive a copy, and would be happy to place it on a listed website for others to download for posterity.
cheers
Henry

Now I have received a PM I can understand this point, thanks to the member concerned. I would recommend anyone looking for a bios to PM someone who is not Zender, but looks like they have received a PM and are an active member.
However, in response to RealBlackStuff - I think that it is only against the rules laid down by Zender to distribute links to the site which contains the files in the public domain, _not_ to distribute the files themselves.
Since most of the laptops concerned belong to the previous generation, to use Zender's terminology, I doubt there will be any new BIOSes released by IBM soon, requiring little ongoing work by Zender. This might be why he has become hard to contact.

HI Everyone! New T400s user from Italy... I currently having Windows 7 64 bit installed on my laptop and the F3507g from Ericsson is not working properly on this system (FRU 43Y6481)... This is why I have purchased a (ORIGINAL) Gobi 2000 card (which seems to work correctly under WIN 7) with 60Y3183 FRU writted on... NOW... I am getting the " Error 1804 - Unauthorized WAN card is plugged in. Power off and remove the WAN card. "... Does anyone have a modified BIOS (and a procedure to do that) in order to make it work properly?!

I mentioned erroneously that your X41 only needs the NO-1802 patch, not a new BIOS.mrkrown wrote:Can someone send me a PM for the thinkpad x41 bios fix i need to replace my wireless card.
However, I confused this with the T41, which only needs the patch from here:

Apologies, you DO want a modified BIOS.
