Power jack Broken

#1 Post by delaneybob » Sat Jan 19, 2008 3:37 pm

Appears to be a loose power jack in the back of my T42- runs on battery but not AC. It is loose in the back. PC does not see the power cord as beign plugged in

Anyone have a link to laptop disassembly and is this a repairable part or a replacement

Thanks

I've replaced it before. Not very complicated with the help of HMM but you need spend some time to gain access to the power jack. You might only need to tighten it.

If you want to order a new replacement, 26R8408 is the FRU number (about $15 I guess). It will come in a big box along with other misc stuff on the mobo.

Good luck!

Question still

#3 Post by delaneybob » Sat Jan 19, 2008 5:17 pm

Thank you for hat link- I wen through the entire manual- I did not see the FRU listed for a procedure.

Is there a more general procedure to follow?

I just want ot make sure I do nto break anything

thanks

As I recall, one must remove (actually, "loosen" sufficiently to move without removing) the motherboard before one has sufficient access to the power jack to replace it. Getting to where the motherboard is loose requires total disassembly of the bottom part of the machine -- which is straight forward and easy, nothing to break, but requires attention to every screw as described in the Hardware Maintenance Manual: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46464

Do not forget to loosen/remove the retaining screws for the parallel connector in the back.

Question on the technique for the paper clip

#6 Post by delaneybob » Sat Jan 19, 2008 8:37 pm

My poer pludg is just loose in te thinkpad, the metal center is solid- no wiggle.
when i look down the power plug, I do not see the metal < clip sticking out like that i see
() with the metal tip in the middle
To bent it back do you stick the small "L" all the way back and try to grad the clip inderneath at the very back or do you try to hook it on the side of the clip and pull.

thanks!

There is a metal tab on the side of the socket which is supposed to contact the side of the plug. You get the paperclip under it and pull so you can bend it out so it will make contact with the side of the plug again. I had to get it under the side but whatever works for you.

Hi- I do not see any gap at between the insid of the power jack nd the clip- do you just gnaw at it with a needle?

If I grab if form the back and pull, it feels like i am going to rip the whole plug out.

Thanks

Here is what I did.

I trook a needle and made a small slot in the side. i then took a very fine jewleres screwdriver and worken the clip up (slightyl ben tot one side. The power plug now fits snug but the battery still doe snto show AC power.

as before if i wiggle the whole jack around, the charge light flickers.

Bad jack?

thanks

Possibly, or the mobo connector is loose.
The jack itself is a separate unit held in with a single screw. It has 4 short wires that lead to a connector that fits on a socket on the motherboard. A pic is worth a thousand words. Here is an ebay link to the part.
The jack moving around means the single screw is loose, not a big deal. The flickering light means that some of the wires going to the motherboard are not secure.
That socket was the first part put into the chassis and the last part to come out. The motherboard has to come out to change it. I mean, by the time you get the motherboard loose enough to get the socket out it is ready to come out, just lift it up out of the way.

Carbon- thank you for all your help. Luckily my company uses Thinkpads so i will try to sweet talk an IT guy perhaps and see if we have parts and if they will help me. It's the wife's PC so i feel really bad. Just that morning i got the thinkpad fan control working.

2 items
- I feel pretty stupid- i have a docking station i never use- battery is charging right now :-)
- If i can find a spare docking station at work- is that jack the same?-the internals looking in have 3 metal clips instead of 1.

I am a mechnical eng by study (i.e. get a bigger hammer type)- is this somethign I should try my self (I will be meticulous). I called a local shop yesterday and they wanted $200 + parts (OMG!!)

The HMM is very detailed in the steps for disassemble and reassembly. I think you will be fine changing it yourself. My advice is take each screw out and lay it on a sheet of paper that mimics the bottom and another one for the top of the thinkpad so you don't lose track of where they go. Just start at the beginning of the HMM and work your way through. Don't try to skip any steps, they are in that order for a reason. Have a big area to work so you can keep the parts grouped together.

I suggest leaving the CPU and fan on the motherboard. The fan attaches to the motherboard only (not to the case). You won't need to reseat the fan or need thermal paste. I also suggest masking tape to attach screws near where they are to go back.
