Considering buying X41t...need opinion
Hello,
I'm new to this forum. This seems to be the best place for Thinkpads. I have an opportunity to buy a used X41 with a gig of ram on it.
There are several issues:
1) the OS installed is a distro of Linux, and there are no recovery discs or partitions, which means I would have to get my hands on a copy of XP tablet edition. No warranty on the machine, so I can't get anything from IBM.
2) there is a hole in the casing of the laptop right next to the kensington lock hole. No idea what it is, but I think it may have been used to lock the laptop down or something. There is nothing behind that hole.
3) the power brick cord has been cut at one point and bondoed up. No biggie really, it still works.
The real concern here is the OS. How hard would it be to restore it to factory condition? I'm not too sure what to think about the hole though.
If it helps, I'm paying $500 USD for it.
Opinions?

If you want to restore to factory condition your best bet is to get a set of recovery disks for the X41T. You can purchase these from Lenovo. It just so happens that a set is currently being offered for sale in this forum's marketplace:

Too much $$$$
If you really have to have an X41T (I'm typing this reply from one), I think $500 is too much for a machine without an OS, a bodo-ed power supply, possibly damaged case and is out-of-warranty.
Hunt around here and on ebay. You should be able to score a machine that is still in warranty and damage-free for a little bit more.
re: the hole in your case
Are you sure this is a hole or is it where the stylus slides in? The tiny hole next to the stylus socket might look like a Kingston lock socket but is instead the hole to loop the lanyard for the stylus. The stylus socket is located at the bottom left-hand corner of the keyboard.
