Which Xseries model would you choose?

#1 Post by gunston » Sun Jan 20, 2008 5:16 am

Personally just bought a X61, feels like the heat and mediocre battery life are the major issue for this model, thinking of whether X60s or X61s or 's' model does has the similar issue. especially for its high power dissipation, frequent spinning FAN...etc.

Pls kindly help to cast your vote in this poll, so what i can cleary see the prefer model by most user.

If you are concerned about power dissipation, you can set the CPU to run at a lower speed. By default, when plugged in, the CPU runs at 100% all the time. (At least for my X61.) You can set the maximum to 100% so the CPU will power up when needed, and set the minimum to like 20%. With battery, you can set the minimum down to 2% or something.

Also, turn off the Bluetooth and WAN if you are not using them. They generate some heat too. Wireless LAN is also always hotter and consumes more power. So use wired LAN whenever possible.

oops, actually this is a set for my cousin. =)
found out this little thinkpad is really heaty with FAN turning on all the time, eventhough the CPU temp is low as 41deg.

I have an X61s through work, but I just ordered an X61 for myself personally (yes I'm one of those guys who walks around with 'two' laptops). My personal X61 I added the WWAN option. I used to use a Cingular card on my old thinkpad (T42) but I hated how it protruded and the thinkpad kept disabling it every time it hibernated. I choose my personal one as a regular X61 to get all the CPU out of it possible, I'm not so concerned about monster battery life. That's what the extended battery is for (work gets me that too). By buying the same model for work and home, I can share my work ultradock whenever I need to install something.

I went ahead and found a nice crumpler bag that will hold both thinkpads without adding a lot of bulk (got the breakfast buffet model).
