Access IBM links are broken on a T42p

#1 Post by Oldgeezer » Sun Jan 20, 2008 10:28 am

Machine is T42p, OS is XP

Recently I noticed that the Access IBM program, which I have not visited for a very long time, is now malfunctioning.

After the flash introduction, with musical accompaniment, the program presents a banner at the top of a totally white page. The banner has links to further pages for "Learn", "Configure", etc. None of them operate. The cursor never changes to a "hand" but stays as an arrow when passing over the links.

Of course, I have downloaded the Access IBM program from the Lenovo site and reinstalled it, but no change.

Any advice from the forum on how to re-enable this program?

Searching through the various posts uncovered two others who report the same problem.

One of them (Bob) solved it by reverting his system to a point before System Update installed Adobe Flash.

So I tried removed Adobe Flash wirth the Add/Remove Control panel.
---No fix.

A visit to Adobe website revealed the need to run a Adobe-supplied uninstaller to completely clean your system of Adobe Flash.

So here's the fix --

the Flash uninstaller, followed by a reboot, followed by a reinstall of Access IBM, will repair the damage done by flash.

My copy of Access IBM now works! -- Thanks to Bob of the G forum.

I didn't succeed in restoring functionality to AccessIBM the first time, either.

Initially, I uninstalled all Flash products using Add/Remove.
When that didn't work, I googled Flash and found this quote from Adobe:

"Due to recent enhancements to the Adobe Flash Player installers, you can now remove the player only by using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller. To remove Flash Player, simply download and run the appropriate uninstaller for your system using the steps below......." etc

(Incredible doublespeak, to call this an "enhancement". Adobe has so tangled up flash in the system that you need their cooperation to kill it!)

Anyway, download and run the uninstaller, then reboot to clean out the referrals to Flash, then reinstall the Access IBM software. I hope that works for you, it worked for me.

Incidentally, now that I am re-acquainted with the AIBM I can see that all of the website links are outdated anyway and the only useful thing in there is the help file.

Which, it turns out, can be accessed directly from the expanded AIBM installer by drilling down into it at c:/Drivers/Win/AIBM/Windows/help.

So if you can't get it working, its no great loss.

I had the same problem, albeit on an R40, after upgrading the Flash player. I found a simple solution that you may want to try.

After pressing the Access IBM button, you do get the Access IBM window, even if it malfunctions because it is not ready for the new Flash player.
Right-click on the title of the window, and select Personalize.
De-select "Enable animation". While you're there, I recommend de-selecting all those option, but your preferences may vary.
Choose OK, then close the Access IBM window.
When you start it again it should be working fine, without using flash.

At least, this worked for me, and it is a very cheap attempt.
Good luck,

Giacomo
