How to increase the Intel 945gm ram allocation for x60?

Hi there,

I have tried both bios and the graphics driver method to increase the intel 945gm ram allocation.

I am pretty sure that we can configure that.

Please advise.

Why not, the intel945 should support that Virtual RAM allocation? I have seen this feature on some other brand of laptop,

I am pretty sure we can from what I read from my searches on the Internet.

I am suspecting that lenovo is not enabling that option to us.

Perhaps someone smart out there has found out anything to go around this.

If you can reprogram a BIOS with your own set of code then perhaps you can do it which is unlikely.

Such a parameter for setting Video RAM is not integrated either by Intel or lenovo for your thinkpad.

well ry, there is something known as reverse-engineering? to be honest with you, i do know that with certain os / notebook, you can change some parameters in some hidden files in the default root. not sure if there is such a thing/approach with the x60, that is why i am embracing this forum's smart ppl. =)

Do this:

Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click Properties. Click the Performance tab > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change.

Virtual Memory is also called Paging File.

Nevertheless I suspect you wanted to change the Video RAM, no?

hey you are right, i meant video ram, it is possible to get systemm ram (like ddr2) to act as a video ram.

it can be done. DEFINATELY sure. especially true for intel 945gm.

if you're thinking of it being Integrated chipsets like before that stole part of your RAM to use for VRAM then you have it wrong. The chips of today comes with some VRAM but they will share (not steal) the system RAM if it's available and ONLY when they need it. So if you're just using Windows and you see it says "shared RAM = 512MB" and you're thinking Oh man, that [censored] card is stealing my RAM, i only have 1GB. That's not the case, it will use up to 512MB of RAM if you should start an application that needs that much RAM. Once the application no longer requests it, it's realeased back to open sharing.

The more RAM you have the more of it it will possibly share. It wont take that much if you only have 1GB like i was saying above, probably only 128MB. If you have 4GB tho it'll share (not steal) up to 768MB i guess. As i said tho, previously integrated video cards stole some RAM (allocated to it by the BIOS) during startup and therefore the OS only sees the rest that's left over. Today with hypermemory and all that the OS sees and can use all of it but when the video card needs to it will use some of the RAM too.

Once again, idle RAM is money wasted.

I fully understand the 3gb addressing issue with xp. We are at a bottleneck situation with hardware and os. Sometimes if one has the cash disposal and pay a small bit more but enjoy the 3% improvement AND the possibility of oh i want to try vista tomorrow if I want thinking (to use that remaining 1 gb) is the same scenerio with someone who owns a ferrari in a small city.

Oh yeah, he/she cannot rev up the speed. But well with the coolness and oh yeah, has the cash and can drive to fancy clubs/pubs feeling cool.

Btw, if you see the ebay link ago and if you google up about the intel 945gm, you can see that it is clearly stated that one can set the video ram allocation with the physical ram.

i think that's probably more on a desktop thing. Desktops with more ellaborate BIOSes would have such options and they do. On a laptop, simplicity is the name of the game and the game is "it just works"

as far as i know, there are at least two other reputable laptop companies (which i can name you, dell and toshiba) who has such bios options. and honestly i dont think it is SUCH an elaborated feature to have. My guess is it is adaptive allocation since there are no options. But then why would that t61 (see that link above) and intel 945gm specifies that it is USER-DEFINABLE!

Lenovo thinkpads are business machines, even advertised as "The Ultimate Business Tool" when sold, the most notebooks that do come with the option you're looking for are mostly consumer line of notebooks. Also, this option is included only on laptops with discrete graphics and not integrated which your thinkpad X60 has.
