T41 freezing up on me help!

#1 Post by djtopcat » Mon Jan 21, 2008 6:48 am

I think before I go after a new 9 cell battery I better figure out what's going on with this T41 I just bought
it's worked smooth as butter since buying it last week
but now all of a sudden I'll be surfing the net and it freezes up no mouse cursor movement and the screen gets glitchy lines off and on?
I'm running the onboard PC doctor diagnostic now
the first time it locked up onme in the "fix disk" second time it went through still going now so far it's passed all the tests
I removed the battery took out the compartment extra RAM and reseated the HD anybody know what this problem might be?
thanks in advance :)

I'm afraid I've got bad news for you...most likely a motherboard/GPU issue...read the sticky at the top of the page...."my T42 shuts down when I move it"....and browse a little bit through this section of the forum, you'll see many machines that have had similar problems....

Good luck.

no I don't think it falls into that category I mean yes it may be the mb is going out but all that is happening is that my screen is freezing up when I pulled the extra RAM out it seemed to be better the diagnostics all passed no beeps very bizarre I don't know what else to try?

Have you run memtest86 on that "extra" RAM?

well I just finished the full onboard pcdoctor diagnostic and it passed in all categories how do I perform a RAM test? isn't MEMTEST86 a retail software is there anything else I can use that won't cost $100?

memtest 86 is not retail software...Google is your friend...I'm sure you'll find a zillion free downloads...

memtest86 is free but you can order a CD. If you prefer to burn it yourself, no problem.

hmm well it probably would help to not have a WIN32 Alcan.a worm in my memory!
I did a Google search on it and my symptoms seem to match freezing screens, unable to hit ctrl alt delete to see running processes
glitches on the display. I think I found my problem
Adaware found it so I turned off system restore and ran ccleaner
and it definitely found the virus.
I then ran my Avast scan and it found it again so I quarantined it hopefully that does the trick :) thanks for the help guys
