Data-program transfer from X40 to T61?

#1 Post by mwagner2 » Mon Jan 21, 2008 11:23 am

What kinds of software/hardware are needed for a transfer?
Old laptop is Thinkpad X40Win XP Pro, and new is Thinkpad T61 Vista
Home premium.

I would like it if the programs would also be transferred.
Thanks
Mahl

Could get a crossover cable and do it via Ethernet.

Thanks for that information. But where does one find a "crossover cable?" Radio Shack perhaps?

And since I am somewhat of a novice---just how does one go about doing this via the Ethernet?

Again, please pardon my ignorance and thanks

I've had very unpredictable results in trying to copy programs from one computer to another, especially when the operating systems are different. It works far better to simply install the program fresh on the new machine.

Copying data files over to a USB drive then to the new machine works well for me. Regular Copy/Paste works fine with XP. Copy/Paste however, is very buggy and slow in Vista. (The service pack pretty much fixes this if you have the SP1 on your Vista machine) Otherwise use Robocopy which now comes in Vista. It is tons faster than Vista's Copy/Paste clunker.

Another dandy copy program is Syncback which has a freeware version. Works in XP and Vista (fast in Vista) and is more intuitive than Robocopy.

you need a crossover cable, just plug in your ergular ethernet cable and the devices will auto cross themselves. All the newer Thinkpads has this feature.

As for transfering programs, that's not a good idea. They are 2 different types of hardware and while it would work with a program like Acronis, you could/would run into troubles with old registry data and settings that's still there from the old machine. It expects A and goes and finds B so it'll crash. You can't also go from Windows XP to Vista and keep the same settings. You'd have to of-course install everything you used before again.

It's better to just install the programs you use fresh on the new system and then copy the data. That's the important part anyways. The programs install in 2 minutes so if you don't have that much time then free up your schedule a bit :)
