ARGHHH...installed Vista x86, but boot record on other HD???

#1 Post by Crunch » Mon Jan 21, 2008 3:46 pm

Hey all,

Alright, I installed Vista 32-bit on the new 200GB MAIN HD...But it always says NTKRNL.EXE missing...I ALWAYS had to hit F12 to boot from HDD1 EVERY time it rebooted! :(

I installed it FROM my old drive, but the boot order is HDD0 (main 200GB drive), and HDD1 (old 100GB drive, but it will only ever boot from there)...........

Before I customize and re-install all apps on my new drive, can someone PLEASE HELP ME and let me know if I should (can?) simply copy the boot record from HDD1 to HDD0 (see above), or if I should re-install Vista YET AGAIN!?:?!! Wouldn't bother me so much NOW, but not LATER when I will have it all configured and activated, as well as apps installed. Btw, you guys were SO right! I love it without the bloatware...I'm just going to get the Acive Protection System, and maybe a few others, but that's all I need. Anything else you think I should have/would be worth getting from the ThinkVantage stuff??

Thanks!!!!! :)

shouldn't it be HDD0? You probably had the HDD in the UBB so that's why.

Slap in the Windows CD and choose "Repair system" then do "FIX MBR" and that'll rewrite the MBR.

That or i think you can go to System Properties - Advanced System Settings - Startup and Recovery - Settings - chooose...

hmm.. normally you were able to edit it (yeah, since XP was an INI file but now with Vista it's an EXE that manages the MBR.)
Current - Thinkpad T410si - Core i3 330m, 4GB, 250GB 5400RPM, WXGA+, FPR, BT, Camera, DVDRW, Gobi2000, Win7 Pro x32
Past - Thinkpad T410 - T400 - T61 - T60 - T43 - T42 - T41 - T40 - T23 - 600X

Got it fixed, thanks!! :) I ended up re-installing the OS to flush out all the crap from the old HD. I love this setup now. 8) Thanks for the reply!
