Really need a suggestion for model...
Really need a suggestion for model...
From 2003 to 2007 i had the most wonderful t42 laptop which i loved dearly. I am in teh market for a new machine but am looking for someone to help me pick it out...
I do not GAME.... I will be using the machine for WEB SURFING, uploading pictures, downloading music, and some basic word processing.
Does anyone have an idea of a good model or some specific specification I should be looking for? Is there anything that I DO NOT need so that I can start eliminating certain specs/machines.
Thank you all...

You've listed your basic computing needs very well. Can you also list your hardware requirements and your budget? Both are key to making a recommendation. For example under hardware, do you require alot of storage? Firewire? Camera? etc. A very important question is do you prefer a certain resolution on the LCD? If your T42's screen resolution was 1024x768 max, you'd probably only be happy with something similar I'd also guess. The T42 was a 4:3 aspect ratio LCD (kind of squarish). Wide screen may be something that you would not like at all, or am I wrong? Are you looking for a brand new machine with at least a 3 year warranty? Have you seen the new Lenovo 'Y' series IdeaPads at Lenovo.com?. Do those models appeal to you at all? Something less flashy?

corleone, please tell us the 7-character product code (e.g. 2373-CWU) found on the bottom of your T42, or at least give us the full specs (including display resolution and size) of this T42. Then, tell us which aspects of this machine you like, which aspects you don't like, which features you find superfluous (e.g. fingerprint reader, optical drive, etc.), and why you want to upgrade.
Virtually all laptops made in this millenium are powerful enough for the tasks you listed. So, you need to tell us more about what your requirements are.

Why buy a new laptop at all? For the uses you describe, that old T42 is likely still the perfect machine. Increase your RAM and perhaps install a larger hard drive, then enjoy the same great machine you have these past three years.

I have found the T60 series to be a very suitable replacment for the T4x series.
It is similar in size and weight. As an aside, I doubt any similarly equipped machine will rival the design beauty of the T4x machines any time soon - they still seem just perfect to me, too.
I have also found the models with Intel integrated video chipsets to be more than adequate for non-gaming needs. I believe they also have better battery life than discrete graphics models and they seem to hibernate and wake up really fast (maybe that is just a coincidence).
There are many T60 models like this available.

T4x machines were probably the nicest of the nice, though I concur with the T60 being very near as nice.
I currently have a 14" T60p that is quite possibly the best ThinkPad I've ever owned. The T42p had a slightly better keyboard, but the T60p is quieter and actually doesn't get as hot. Both had excellent build quality.

I believe my T42 was a 2373-dxu but I will have to check to make sure.
All i really need is USB drives for my camera, iPod and USB drives... i dont htin kill need firewire and have never used it to date...
It did not have a finger reader and I would not want/need one of those.
As far as storage, i would think that the more the better, but i do have an 80gig external hard drive... Lots of music and photos require a nice sized hard drive...
I will look into the R60's thank for the recommendaton.
Mt t42 no longer works... it has a mother board issue as well as an LCD issue... that is why i need to replace it...
Thanks fo rall teh suggestions... keep em coming!
In regard to hardware requirement, i dont reall yknwo what this means, sorry... i guess i would like a CD/DVD burner.... is that what you mean?
Budget >1,000
