CPU usage Stuck at 100%

#1 Post by chazz » Wed Jan 23, 2008 1:11 pm

can someone tell me on why my CUP usage is stuck at 100% after a few hours of running the computer (R50P) and it doesn't come down...it started last week and I thought it might be software/virus issue so I wipe the HD clean a few days back and did a clean install but it seems to be having the same problem again...
thanks

Obvious step #1 is the Task Manager. Unless it's a driver or something system-y , going there will quickly narrow down the cause.

I experienced the same and it was indeed a virus. As per aaa reply.. check the Task manager as will give you a clue.

As to what I have experienced I get this message from a windows update icon in the taskbar that I need to download antispyware apps. My CPU utilization the whole time was highest in the history of my laptop. My avast antivirus was totally clueless, S&D Spybot found a lot malwares but cannot remove one or two.... I happen to download a trojan removal utility from the web which was able to remove them but after removal my XP crashed... probably due to corrupt system files already...

I hope this is not your case... anyhow try running scan for viruses, trojans and the like just to be sure.

If you have done a clean install, check if Windows is updating... windows update can eat up CPU too..
Best Regards,
Rosh

hummm..this is strange.. now the CPU is 100%
"Process" in the task manager showing all 00..
so nothing is really overworked...but CPU is still 100%
I did a clean wipe of the HD with Hitachi Drive Fitness and wipe the HD clean..i have only down loaded window updates..
hum. strange.

There's a sort-by-cpu option. If that doesn't turn up anything then it it might be a certain driver.

R40 Cpu @ 100%

I definitely downloaded a Patch for this error on the Ibm website a few weeks ago when I made a new Driver Cd, but I can't remember exactly where.
Try a search on the Ibm site for 100% error.
If you don't have any luck, let me know and I'll e-mail it to you.

System Update automatically installed this patch for me some weeks ago.
