Lenovo System Update 3.13 shows newer stuff than website

#1 Post by tinkererguy » Wed Jan 23, 2008 1:15 pm

Interesting, this update today
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-66956
has the new System Update 3.13. I hated older versions, especially back in September when the background scheduler used to suck up 100% CPU. I know they've now fixed fixed that issue:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-69109

But what I found interesting si that there seems to be updates it offers that aren't on the website yet.

For example, for a T61P 6459CTO laptop, the downloads are here:
Link
But the data is stale.

When running this new 3.13 version, I did get prompted to provide credentials (I'm logged in as Power User) about 5 times to elevate to Administrator, for registry changes it apparently wanted to do, but then it finally launched and worked fine. Later, I right-clicked and chose "Run as Administrator" but this didn't start tvsu.exe at all, just closed the window.

Despite my thinking my Presentation Director and Power Manager were up to date (according to website, they were), System Update 3.13 offered me newer ones than what I had installed, something I double checked to confirm.

Interesting...

MOD EDIT: Very long link modified, tip: please use tinyurl next time.

I noticed that the driver matrix for T61p and T60 hasnt been updated for a while. The last update was last Des 27, 2007. IBM used to update their driver often...

I still avoid Access Connections and Client Security Solutions (for speed and reliability reasons), fyi, by simply unchecking them during the review process.

It did all the updates, except for one,
"Windows Vista Update Module KB929637 64bit"

Tried the new System Update on another machine, a T60 with 32 bit Vista, same issue, couldn't install
"Windows Vista Update Module KB929637 32bit"

Looking at result screen, simply says
Results from this session:
1 Package did not install
Windows Update Module KB929637 64bit

Known problem since November, nothing to do with Lenovo System Update then likely (more a Windows Update thing):

FYI, in Windows Update, I always right-click, hide, all hardware related updates Microsoft offers me (like the new Intel driver from 1/8/2008). As others have said here before, especially when it comes to video drivers, stick with Lenovo site for all hardware related updates.

I used to agree with that advice for all hardware drivers but I no longer agree with it for nVidia equipped models.

I've been using a newer and what seems to be a better performing video driver than the Lenovo nVidia driver which can be obtained from the Laptopvideotogo site. No ill effects thus far and better performance for games. For other stuff though, I still tend to wait for Lenovo releases.

OK, ran this file for a manual install (found in "View Details" in System Update):
C:\DRIVERS\OSFIXES\VISTA\KB929637\929637-x64.msu

then this message popped up:

Windows Update Standalone Installer
The update does not apply to your system

So I'm not going to click on "Do not show this update" and not worry about it.
