KDE 4.0 on Windows

With the port of KDE 4.0 to QT 4.x complete and KDE 4.0 released for Linux for a few weeks now, it is now available for Windows platform as well. From reading TFA it is still a little rough round the edges but I think its an excellent start.

But I think I'd might wait a bit.. Hate running early states of an new software.

The only things I'm really interested in getting working on Windows would be Konqueror and Amarok. That would be incentive enough for me to run Windows as my primary OS so I wouldn't have to switch between gaming mode and normal mode.

I probably should switch to Windows and just use my FOSS apps on that as a more "suitable" solution

It might be a while before KDE 4.0 applications are ready for primetime on Windows but looking at the momentum behind it and the initial success that time may not be that far.

I am also going to eagerly wait for the whole KDE 4.0 shell to be available for Windows.

I tried out kde 4, and I actually was not that fond of it. I cannot tell what is was. I might improve with 4.1. I guess I am just a GNOME kind of guy. Interesting move none the less.
For Windows J. River Media Center is quite good, and should at least be as good as Amarok, although it is not as tightly connected to some online services.

Edit: Of course, a larger choice of good open source app for windows is always nice. Is Konqour different from Fx?

Rasmus, did you try try KDE 4.0 under Linux or Windows?

I tried the Beta version of KDE 4.0 under Linux for a few minutes but at the time it wasn't stable enough to make any opinions about it. It does look a little more slicker than KDE 3.5.x though.

Hey Syed,
I tried it under OpenSUSE Linux. It certainly looked better than previous versions of KDE, but I still felt more comfortable on a Gnome desktop. I did look pretty sleek though. I have not tried it under Windows. Have they ported programs to Windows or will it be a shell replacement? I will try Amarok whenever it is ready.

Rasmus, I have always used KDE and could never get accustomed to Gnome. This release is just some of the individual KDE prgrams ported to Windows. The KDE shell, on the other hand, is very much integrated and dependant on the X-server so I suspect it might be a while before it gets ported. I haven't tried Amarok myself so can't really comment yet.

Konqueror renders pages faster, uses less memory, and rocks compared to Firefox and Internet Explorer.

according to wiki it is not faster than IE or FF but that's not the point (plz lets not discuss which one is better because admins will lock this thread). Both IE and FF have some annoyances and I am willing to check out just another browser. Konqueror, seems at least, will gain a lot of momentum on windows so Im sure it won't be too long until major bugs are fixed. I also want to see if its something that will fit my taste for comfortable browsing experience. Plus with its function as explorer I could replace the completely useless explorer in Vista and maybe switch to this operating system some time in the future.
