R40 Keyboard compatibility

#1 Post by ThinkpadUser302 » Thu Jan 24, 2008 3:35 pm

I need a new keyboard for my R40 (model 2897-34U). According to the IBM site I need the following part number for an English, U.S. keyboard 08K4729 or 08K4757. I have seen several keyboards on ebay that claim they are compatible, but are different part numbers? Is there anyway to determine if other partnumbers would be compatible? Are all keyboards from the R Series compatible? Would a keyboard from an R32 model work with an R40? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome to Thinkpads.com

AFAIK all R40 keyboards are compatible... they differ in part numbers due to what language they support (i.e. French European = 08K4733). As for an R32 keyboard to plug into an R40... personally I do not think it would fit but I have not tried it though. What I have tried so far is to use an R40 keyboard on an R31 and it did NOT fit.

Hardware maintenance manual for Thinkpad R40 can be downloaded here for reference.
