Will Recovery disks from different types work?

#1 Post by Padhead » Thu Jan 24, 2008 3:36 pm

Howdy Folks, I picked up another T43 last night. It didn't have a IBM preload on it. I think the guy basically wiped it clean with a XP disk, and then added the IBM software. He also has a partitian on it.

I want to wipe it clean and start again, but it didnt come with the recovery disks. I have a set from another T43p, but I am not sure if they will work.

It's a 2668 HU1 T43 Bluetooth, 7200 drive, UXGA Flexview. GPU 128MB V3200

The new machine is a

2668 89U T43p No Bluetooth, 5400 drive, SXGA Flexview, GPU 64MB x300

What do you think Folks, will it work?

Are all the drivers on those disks, or just the ones for certain models? thanks

It will work fine. All the models that start with a 2 (2XXX-XXX) use the same set. Those that start with a 1 (1xxx-xxx) use intel graphics use a different set.

If this is true, it is good news. I have a T40p (2373-G3U) with a set of recovery disks. May I use them on a T43p (2668-G1U) that was recently acquired without a set of recovery disks? Thanks for any info.

T40/p and T43 use different HAL, and the hardware itself is not that similar. You may be better off just locating a proper set of disks and avoiding the headache altogether.

What's wrong with having a clean install of XP and the IBM drivers added on top?

Has anyone else tried this? I'd like to make Windows run a bit faster and run a more optimized setup - my other XP setup on another Dell machine is around 11gb (full install with programs) where the Thinkpad seems to be around 25gb. WAY too big. A bare install of XP with a few programs I need can be 5 or 6gb.

Since I don't have an installable copy of XP with my Thinkpad, though, I'm apt to just avoid the issue, though (not sure if Lenovo even sends XP discs?).

I very much doubt Lenovo would send you a disk from which you can perform a totally clean install.
But you should be able to create a nlite install CD from your existing install (assuming you have one). If you really want a small install, I think that's the way to go. But it's even more tedious than a regular clean install...

Oh, thanks for the suggestion.
I thought I needed a Windows CD for nlite, but I'm reading and you seem to be right, I mainly just need an RTM file. I'm going to go back to factory default first, and if it's worth the effort, I'll use nlite. Thanks.
