X31 strange resource conflict error with Atheros AR5004G

#1 Post by chrisp » Fri Jan 25, 2008 8:40 am

Hi,
some days ago I installed a used Atheros AR5004G wireless card (FRU 39T0384), and everythig was ok. The day after I updated the driver but it began to give this error on POST:

"Error
Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller in slot 01
Bus:02, Device:02, Function:00

Press <F1> to Setup"

so I tried to revert to the previous driver but nothing happened.
I did several rebootings and afer some time it worked again
I thought I solved the problem, but the following day I had to boot 2 or 3 times to make it work.

Isn't it strange? I do nothing, absolutely nothing, just shutting down and rebooting, and it works.
I noticed that once it works, it continues working for all the day, like if it keeps "warm" in a way. So when I think I've fixed it, the following day it comes out again!!!

I tried to solve this using the 01C9 fix, but nothig changed.

The last thing I did one week ago (since then it worked perfectly) was to take away the metallic cover over the card (the ibm one, as the Atheros has a metallic cover over the card too) and incredibly it worked. I tried again some day later and it was still working perfectly.
But yesterday that problem came out again!!!

I don't know what to do anymore. Could it be the backup battery? Any harware? Can I configure any IRQ manually?
Please help me!

Thank you

I just want to add that what I don't understand at all is the fact that it is absolutely random whether it work or not.

For example, today I booted almost 10-15 times, and it never worked. Tonight, i came back home, turned it on and it worked. It drives me crazy... :x

maybe I've found the solution: I think it is a simple matter of contacts, I removed the card, re-inserted an pulled a bit upwards, and now it seems to work even with the metallic cover (that, I presume, was pushing it down). I just hope that It won't be necessary to do this once a week!!!

My favorite mPCI WiFi vendor says that card does not work in an X31.
See this EBay auction.

Try this card instead. I had an X31 with this card in it and it worked fine

They ship worldwide ...

Thank you, but it works... sometimes , and the fact is that it is this one the card, and the seller says it works with the X31...

Does anyone else have this card in the same laptop?

That seller says "update your BIOS before install the card". Did you do that?

Yes, I have the latest bios (3.02) and ECC (or somethin like that) (1.08). When it works it is perfectly recognized by the bios and windows... the problem is that sometimes it isn't.
But I'm more and more convinced it has something to do with the hardware more than with the software.

Thank you again

Does this means that we can't use atheros cards in X31's???

What are the options? I don't think that phillips are better than atheros.

Carlos, Phillips is the manufacturer, but the onboard chipset is still Atheros. And with regard to the parts I linked to, they are all genuine IBM OEM parts.

Since I haven't found any solution this problem what I'm having as well, I'll bring this thread back to life..

So, I have the same error on boot and I'm out of ideas. The problem came up with now signs of warning, no drivers update, no hardware modications etc. Everything was running as smooth as silk and suddenly, out of the blue it appeared.

My wireless adapter is IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter with Atheros chip. It should be totally compatible with X31.

I have tried change the IRQ settings from 11 to automatic, disabling some, allocating different IRQ to different devices. No luck.

I have restored the original factory install of the windows. No luck.

If I run the pre-desktop PC-Doctor it prints passed on both of Phillips test 'passed'. If I press 'esc' to get to windows from the boot error screen, the device is visible in the device manager but there's nothing to be done.

Anybody? Any ideas?

as I said I noticed that if I try to keep the card pulled upwards (towards the keyboard) the card is recognized.
So I put a small adhesive paper ball just under the card, in order to make a small pressure without damaging the motherboard (you should be able to close the minipci card clips as well).
As now it is still working. I hope it will continue...

...strange but true!

I need to test that further but the first results seem to be that it actually works!

Amazing!

what can I say? Let's hope together!
By now I don't want to understand it anymore, it's enough that it works!

Thank you. This is exactly what was wrong with my computer. I had stripped another computer and was poking around in my thinkpad to see what it could use. I wound up putting back all the original parts and when I tried to reboot I got the resource conflict error. After reading this thread I opened the wireless network card compartment and tightened things up a bit. Rebooted the computer and everything worked fine.

bad news: I don't know how long will this solution last.
Yesterday the wifi card was giving problems again... and now it seems there's nothing to do... the solution lasted two weeks for me. I hope yours will last longer.
I'm going to sell it and buy a intel 802.11 b only :?
