IBM T42 23735WM
IBM T42 23735WM
Hi guys.
I just purchased this laptop. I should be getting it next week. Its a 1.5Ghz P4. I am not sure if its dothan or banias. Anyone knows?
I got a feeling its a banias.
The URL is here:
http://www-605.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... alogId=-36
By the way lets say its a banias, what would the cpu be equivalent to in terms of a desktop p4? 2.4ghz?
One more thing, for the ram, i am looking to buy another 256mb stick, do i get pc2100 or pc2700 or it doesn't really matter? Can it be any brand?
Regards.
Kenn.

It's a Banias Pentium M (not a Pentium 4). IBM does not offer the Dothan 1.5ghz CPU for some reason. There's not much performance increase between 512mb and 768mb. You can use pretty much any PC2700 SO-DIMM notebook memory.

A good rule of thumb to convert Pentium M speeds to Pentium 4 speeds is to multiply by 1.5 - for example: in your case you will be getting a 1.5GHz Pentium M. Multiplying by 1.5x1.5 gives a Pentium 4 speed equivalent of 2.25GHz.k3nnis wrote: By the way lets say its a banias, what would the cpu be equivalent to in terms of a desktop p4? 2.4ghz?
The 1.5x rule is very general. Depending on the tasks you will be performing, the factors can range from 1.2x to 1.8x.
Also, remember that total system performance is affected by a lot of other hardware components like memory, hard drive, video card etc.
Anyway, enjoy your new machine, and welcome to the forums.
Thanks for the replies guys:) I really appreciate it. Oh yeah by the way that is in australian dollars:P
I think i will just get a stick of 512, as maybe later on i want to get 1GB.
Now i heard the hitachi 7k60 7200rpm HD makes a big diff in speed increase, is this true? Can i tell a difference right away? Does it vibrate? As i read a few user opinions and they say it vibrates a bit.
Regards.
