Thinkpad R52 (1846-ACQ) incompatible with TDKDVD+RW 8x discs

#1 Post by makinjr » Sat Jan 26, 2008 3:54 am

I bought DVD+RW disck package. I thought thinkpad DVD drive supports writing DVD+RW (done that before with 2x speed discs). Now my software claims that my discs are "readonly".

Is there any way to check medium compatibility of my drive? Drive type is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4080N. Properties window (windows explorer) says that drive is full and file system is RAW.

What can I do? Can not format disc or read/write to it? Tried several discs from the package (10 disc package).

If I remember rightly there was a long period when TP DVD-RW drives could only burn "-", but could read "+". If you could supply the FRU Nr. from the drive it might help to find out more exactly.

The Nero InfoTool can give you the media types your drive model supports. When you insert a disc, this tool can give you the disc type also. This is general info of course but sometime can be useful.

Nero Infotool reports for DISC:
- Blank DVD+RW
Layers 1
Supported speeds 3.1X- 2.1X-1.3X-0,5X
Blank capacity 4.38 GH
Manufacturer ID RICOHJPN W21

And it reports that Drive supports:
reading DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM
writing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM

Can not see why it should not work!!

Were you using DLA? Does it write with Nero or RecordNow to these TDK discs?

I did try with DLA and DLA uninstalled. No difference!
Tried with DVD-RW 2x disc and that works just fine. :?
Still all tools I used reported that driver supports DVD+RW:s too...

To tell you the truth, I've never used DVD RW discs. I've always used DVD R. I have some RW disc around but never used them in fear of the 2nd and subsequent writes not being reliable.

I guess you may need to use discs rated for lower speed.
