X41 VS X61
X41 VS X61
According to this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=54150
I'd like to compare between X41 and X 61.
Which one is better in term of cost effective?
Giving the fact that X61 runs around $900+/- with warranty
and $450+/- for X41.
Thank you.

Man, gimme X61t for $900 in EU
.
For the price, I would grab the x61 in no time. If you ask about cost effectiveness, then you have to specify, what are you going to do with it. Many things are more than 2 times better (like the cpu), some are not, some are unacceptable on x41 for some ppl (like the 20MB/s max, 22ms access time HDD).

The X61 has a different body than the X41. Most of the things are similar but ports and other misc things are rearranged. The X61 is more Lenovo style and the X41 is more IBM style. Personally I like the IBM style.

X41 VS X61
Thank you very much for your responses.
I think you're right. I should specify what exactly I'm looking for.
I'm just a normal user so most of the time I need powerpoint
for presentation and most of the other office suite, pdf file, surfing, and other image and movie software.
I believe X41 should be "enough" but I don't like to buy new laptop
every 2-3 years so I'm looking for 4-5 years or so.
I haven't seen X41 and X61 by myself so it's kind of hard for me
to make decision which one I like the most. I wish I could see and
touch them before I buy one but unfortunately, it's so hard to find the real one at bestbuy or circuitcity or compusa.
Again, thanks so much for your input. I do appreciate.

The X41 has three principle advantages - cost, size (marginally smaller and lighter) and build quality (IMO, good bit more solid than the X60/61).
The X61 will otherwise be the better machine - substantially faster and more expandable (and so 'future-proof').
I say go for the X61 unless the price really bugs you. It's a machine that should definitely be usable for the next 4-5 years. The X41, while okay for many things today ('image and movie software', depending what they are, may be a problem), is 3-year old technology. If the X61 is too pricey, look into a used or refurbished X60.

An X41 should be fine for the standard office tasks you're talking about. However, an X60 series machine is better in virtually every metric, and is better prepared to deal with whatever might lie in the future: dual core CPU, a higher max memory limit, a 2.5in hard disk that is faster and gives you upgrade opportunities (compared to the 1.8in HDD which is slow and effectively proprietary), better/more oprtions for wireless adapters, ...
If you're looking for a good light notebook for now, with a bit of scope for the future, perhaps try and find a run-out or lightly used X60s? Although it's the recently superceded model, there isn't a great difference between it and the X61... and you're sure to find one quite cheaply. I mention the 's' model since you're also talking about the X41 -- low weight must then be a factor for you. The 's' models are the only ones that can take the slimline 4-cell battery, which will give you a carrying weight comparable to a similarly lightened-up X41.
I have had two X60s'es and an X41 tablet*, the build quality has been impeccable with them all (well, except for the broken digitiser on the tablet that went haywire
). I prefer the port layout of the X60 series (two USBs on one edge is much more convenient, when using a USB-powered CDROM that needs two ports)

I would be careful about the s version. It has a lower quality TN display (afaik) versus the x61 best technology IPS display (better color, very droolable viewing angles). And its no tablet.. but it comsumes less power.. so the choice is again about supposed usage

Huh? Neither the X61 nor the X61s are tablets. The X61s uses either the same LCD as the regular X61 or an UltraLight one (depending on the precise configuration). The UL LCD is both lighter and brighter.weepy wrote:I would be careful about the s version.
