T42 AUTO-SHUTDOWN

#1 Post by honbut » Sat Jan 26, 2008 6:46 pm

Hi.
i have a t42 IBM laptop, about 4 years now
it has this random program of shuting itself down shortly i start it up

at first i thought it might have been my harddrive, so i scanned it, and it had a virus, so i cleaned it and tried again, but it still shuts down

so i went a got a new harddrive, and when installing a clean windows, it still does the same thing.

so would this not be a harddrive problem and a hardware problem?
someone plz help me!
and thx

Welcome to the forum!

Please read the sticky "My T42 shuts down when I move it" and tell us whether you've found the symptoms of your machine in there...

Good luck.

none of them seem to be the problem
althought i had a GPU problem before
i got a new board tho and it worked great.

i really don't know what is the problem with my TP is..
it just started to do that one day.
It runs in safe mode for like a good 10 min, but it will auto shutdown right after!

Is this the message you are getting or does it shut down without any warning? If it it's the latter then follow ajkula66's advice.

However, if you are getting the message it's still the same virus. You propably installed XP from a CD without service packs and had ethernet cable connected and it mostly likely hit your laptop on the first boot. It had done the same for me a few times before I realised to store Service pack 2, a firewall and a virus scanner on a memory stick and install them before connecting to the internet. Old XP cd installation without service packs is extremely vulnerable to this virus..(mblast, nachi..it has multitude of names).

You can use RUN/SHUTDOWN -A to prevent the system from shutting down and install firewall and a virus scanner to get rid of the pest. After that get updates ASAP.

Nope, neither of them seems to be the case.
My XP has SP2 already in it so i'm pretty sure thats not the case either.

My TP boots and and right after Windows XP loads and before the Login screen, it just shuts down. And i tried a fresh install of Xp but it still does the same thing. Going in safe mode will allow me to run for about max 10 mins and it will shutdown.

My TP is moveable so i don't think its my GPU.

and also, when i start my TP it has a chance of not starting(hard drive does not start). Could this be also a problem? and its happening on both my new and old harddrive

Sounds a lot like a T41 that I had. It shut down whenever the GPU reached around 39 deg Celsius. If I used the laptop in front of an air conditioner, it could run for much longer because the GPU stayed under 39 deg for much longer. See if you can increase your T42's runtime by keeping it cool in front of an AC.

How does it shutdown? Does Windows say "system is logging off, shutting down etc" before actually doing that or the machine just turns off all of a sudden?

What about booting into BIOS and see how long the system can stay awake? If the problem is caused by viruses or some software, you shouldn't experience it in BIOS.

Good point, or the OP can boot a Linux live CD to see if it fails in any other OS.
