I've been using the free version of ZoneAlarm for ages with no problem.

Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

I am a former user of Sygate, Outpost Personal Firewall Pro (3+ years), Jetico (2 days) and, yes, Symantec/Norton that came with my T43.

CFP 3.0 is a firewall/HIPS (Host Intrusion Protection System) hybrid product. Version 3.0 was released about two months ago and, while there are still some bugs, it is working very well on my T43 and on an old Micron PIII 500MHz desktop system.

Both machines are running Windows XP Pro SP2 with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0.1.321.

I post frequently on the CFP help forum, so if you need assistance in setting up CFP on your ThinkPad, let me know.

The best news: CFP is FREE.

Hi USSS,

Thanks for the reply, however it is because of Comodo that I made the request in the first place. It seems that at times Comodo maxs out my processor at 100% and in general seems fairly resource hungry.

FYI I am using V2.4 with certified applications database v3.

I used Kerio v2.1.5 for a long time and it served me well so I am tempted to revert to that.

By the way, will I have any trouble uninstalling the version of Comodo that I have?

Thanks for all your help with this.

The issue with 100% CPU usage was apparently resolved with the release of CFP 3.0. There are still sporadic reports of the problem, though. However, AFAIK, none of these posts are from ThinkPad users.

At the moment, CFP is consuming about 3.7 MB of memory on my T43, with a peak of less than 10.2 MB. So the latest release is consuming fewer resources.

To remove your current version of CFP, perform the normal unistallation routine via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Then review my list of comprehensive steps for uninstalling CFP here:
http://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3/co ... 220.0.html

I know: no software should require this much work to remove. But I think upgrading to v3.0 is worth the time and effort.

I had the same Comodo config as you, see this post.
By installing V3 (only the firewall), I sorted that problem.
I think it was caused by the latest (automatic) update from 2.4.

Hi RealBlackStuff,

Thanks for the info, if I can uninstall v2.4 sucessfully, I might have a go at v3.

However I have bought the ashampoo pro firewall, do you have any info on whether it is any good (Their burning suite is superb and as I use that, I got this at a knockdown price).

Speak to you soon.

On matousec.com, this Ashampoo firewall did poorly, failing 24 of 26 leak tests.
It's a "me too" firewall from a "me too" company.
'nough said.

Hi again RBS,

Thanks for telling me that.

I'll now have a go at Comodo 3 as I've managed to get rid of v2.4 sucessfully.

Thanks again for your input, it is much appreciated.

Speak to you soon.
