T60 buzzy fan noise

#1 Post by orca3000 » Sun Jan 27, 2008 9:44 pm

Whenever the fan is on, it gives an extremely irritating buzz instead of the normal humming noise. Do I need to replace the heatsink? Is there an easy way to fix this?

I am not observing any overheating.

Yes, I know about the fan control application. I don't want to control the fan myself. I just want to get rid of the buzz.

Just tossing out a couple ideas here...

Might be way off the mark...

Could there be something stuck in the fan blades. (tiny piece of paper or something that got drawn into the cooling inlet, or dropped thru the top?)

Perhaps a loose part internally that allows the fan housing to vibrate?

You could remove the keyboard and investigate so see anything in there that is causing the noise.

My two T60 machine's fans only make a "whooshing" sound when they run, that's why I suspect a foreign object.

If you use canned air to blow out the fan area, make sure you gently hold the fan to prevent it from spinning during the air blast.
