Latest video driver causes blue screen after standby

Thinkpad T60p (8743-CTO) with ATI Radeon X1400 chipset.

I just installed video driver 8.441-071128a-056348C (dated 12/14/2007, described in document MIGR-62841). The machine now sometimes dies with a blue screen after coming out of standby. I have it in an Advanced Dock.

It never did this before I installed this video driver, so I've reinstalled the previous version.

Anyone else having this problem?

I am. I get the blue screen on my T60p since I installed the latest updates including the ATI driver you mentioned. I'm docked in the Advanced dock as well but mine crashes usually 3-5 minutes after initial startup. I wasn't sure which driver was causing the problem but now I know where to start. Do you know if there's a hot-fix for this driver?

No I don't know; sorry.

It has since occurred to me that I also installed the latest Bluetooth update recently, so it is even possible that the video driver is not the problem.

Argh.

I used System Update to automatically update my system which was a mistake. Now I don't which driver is causing the problem. It included 13 updates; wireless adapter, video, BIOS, fingerprint software, bluetooth, power mgr. etc. I guess I'll have to use process of elimination to find the bad one. I was hoping someone else had already figured it out....

Well, I am fairly certain that only my Bluetooth and video drivers were updated before the problem started, so it's probably one or the other.

By the way, it doesn't seem to be exactly easy to roll back to a previous version of the video driver. For one thing, Lenovo doesn't seem to have them posted on its website. Fortunately, I saved mine from the last update. Then, when I tried to install it, I found that it would not let me install it over a newer version.

The procedure that seems to have worked was the following:

1) Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
2) Select "ATI Software Uninstall Utility". That asks you if you want to install all ATI software.
3) Reboot

At this point I was very relieved to see that the native Windows VGA driver worked so I could at least see the screen, albeit with huge icons, etc. At this point, I could reinstall the previous ATI driver without a hitch.

Incidentally, one of the things the ATI driver tries to install is .NET 2.0. I have learned from experience that if you try to install .NET 2.0, you must first disable the IIS Admin service, or the install hangs. Alternatively, you can tell it not to reinstall .NET 2.0 again, as you presumably have it installed already.

I went to the ATI website to see if there were known issues with the driver but couldn't find anything in their knowledgebase.

I found the driver listed but not my adapter. My video adapter is the ATI FireGL V5250 but it wasn't listed. They had a V5200 and various other V* types but not V5250. Do you think it's a separate product just for ThinkPads? What do you have?

I have a Radeon x1400. The ATI website has a program I can run to see whether they support my machine; I ran it and found that it does not.

They explain somewhere that many laptop manufacturers have custom modifications to the display hardware, and you can get drivers only from them.

FYI, I did report the problem to Lenovo; they said they hadn't heard about any issues and thanked me profusely for reporting it -- claiming that too often people just don't bother to tell them about such problems.

Also FYI, I have not had any blue screens since I installed the previous version of the driver; though I still consider it too soon to tell for certain.

I have a T60P (8743 CTO) with a GL5250. I am just now getting a bluescreen after coming out of standby. I am not using a dock. I also have all of the latest updates. I am currently using Norton Security Suite 2008 and all programs with tools work great.

Hi - I've had this problem off and on since getting my T60 a year ago. It went away for most of last summer, but is now back with a vengeance (see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... n+suspend )

Video is ATI Radeon X1300 with Driver 8.383.1.1000 21/06/2007. As you'll see from posting above, tried various video drivers... feel sure (don't know why) it's video related....

I rolled my driver back to previous version dated 6/07. I uninstalled
ATI software. I also set my power scheme to Thinkpad default. Now I have no blue screen coming off of standby. Keep in mind that I now have no ATI software but then again I really dont need it. I went to desktop and adjusted my properties to 1650x1050.

After using System Update a couple of weeks ago the ATI driver was updated. (I have a T60 2613CTO with x1400 video.) After that update I began to get very sudden and hard lockups (black screen, no keyboard response, forced to reset power button) during some DiVX/H.264 video playback.

On an intelligent hunch I de-installed the new ATI driver (rev. 8.442) and went back to the prior release (rev. 8.383), which luckily I still had on my drive, as I don't see it available any longer for download.

So far I haven't had any of the strange hard lockups like before.

I called Lenovo to try to open up an informational case on this, so that they could gather information and hopefully recall that driver or otherwise correct it. Sadly, the phone tech was incompetent and didn't understand I was already fixed and was only trying to help Lenovo, and by extension, my fellow Thinkpad owners. Oh well...

Thanks for the warning. Sounds like I should skip 8.442 and wait for the next version.

Same problem, with 8.442 on my T60 2613CTO. I was able to rollback the driver to 8.383 via the Device Manager, but the ATI Catalyst Control Center wouldn't work afterwards, so I uninstalled ONLY that application from Add/Remove.

I had other problems I think were related to the driver update. Bootup was slower, and some other apps weren't behaving properly, like 3M Post-it Notes, when first opening (drawing of the notes was slow). And I think the bluescreen from suspend triggered a problem with corruption of something in my WordPerfect installation, forcing me to uninstall and reinstall it.

The XP driver for the earlier version is not available on the Lenovo site, but the Vista driver is. That's ridiculous.

They should keep the old ones available... They (IBM) used to! I just called Lenovo and reported the problem, too, and asked that they put the earlier version on their site. ATI does not support the x1400 on Lenovo systems, and while the ATI software is downloadable if their utility that checks the system OK's things, I'm not going that way...

By the way, if you want to get rid of that ATI entry on all folder context menus, just remove this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ACE

Can someone who has the 8.383 drivers still please upload them somewhere downloadable and post a link ? I have the same problem with my T60p, but can't find the old drivers anywhere on my drive.

I have gone back and forth with the installation and removal of the latest video driver and the catalyst control center. The blue screen is definately a by-product of the latest video driver. Unfortunately, removing the videodriver then leaves the catalyst control center non-functional.

Remove the entire update and allow Windows new hardware manager to connect to the update server to search for the latest certified driver. The system will work fine with this driver.

If anyone can find the older driver that can be downloaded that would be great. I too have this problem and it seems to be directly connected to Norton products on my computer (360, NIS 2008, System Works 2008, Ghost 12). All seem to cause conflict with new video driver - thus seems to point to a common dll within norton that conflicts with latest video driver. Any help with old driver version??
