Task Bar loses settings after reboot..!

The taskbar on my T42p Q1U reverts to the standard settings after an XP reboot..

i set it to show quick launch and then lock the taskbar..

reboot

it reverts to no quick launch, taskbar remains locked..

reset, reboot, and it reverts again..!

anyone have any suggestions..

Try this registry change and reboot:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoSaveSettings
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: 0 = disabled

Bill, I had exactly this problem a few months ago, and duly posted - to no avail. This is to say that while I did what everyone suggested, the problem still occurs - hopefully todays 'fix' will be a good one.

tried searching for this..
does not find it..

can not find anyplace that refers to any taskbar settings..

any other ideas..?

Bill, the key doesn't actually exist, you have to create it.*

I have done this and so far so good, but then, it IS a random problem so it could appear in a few days time...

*click right on 'Explorer' then select 'New'
Rename the 'new' key as 'NoSaveSettings', right click on the new name and select 'Modify'...

Right click on the little folder 'Explorer'
Select 'New' and rename the new key as "NoSaveSettings" (without the quotes !)
Right click this new key and select 'New' and DWORD
Use the default value of "0"
Close and reboot

what little folder 'EXPLORER'..?

When you run "regedit" and start developing the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft..." etc. etc. you see a little brown (beige?) folder to the left of each layer of the developing string, and to the left of this 'folder' is a box with a cross in it - only when the folder can be further developed. When you get to the end of the above string (the 'Explorer' part) there is no little box with a cross, as this part cannot be further developed.

It's at this point where you click right on the little beige folder, to add a DWORD value to this key.

If you're not familiar with the registry, take extreme caution, a slight error could cause major damage.

Perhaps someone could build him a .reg to do the job.

Cutting and pasting it from here into notepad and double clicking it would be much safer in this case.

Selvan777 I'm sorry but I think Bill is doing this on purpose

he's being "doing" things with laptops for too long now not to know how to make a register mod...(hey, back me up here people - James? Nonny??)
I think it's rather more that the explication is/was a bit vague - sadly it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking everyone understands what it is one is talking about...I used to drive a Fiat UNO and I know what I'm talking about...don't I?

you did not say from within regedit..
its really not so important if i screw up the registry..
i can always re-run trueimage and reclone the drive..

i'll mess around with that as soon as caroline releases me from the chains and stops using that whip in such interesting ways..

I'm glad to hear Caroline is obviously getting back in shape - I've been extremely busy recently and this (and other) forum has sadly been far from my mind...things are calming down a little now, hence my re-apparition.

Fully realising I'll get it the neck from Nonny as this isn't really the place, how is Caroline now?

caroline is getting back to something close to normal..
even though the doc still has to review the last x-ray films on monday..
the fracture is not fully healed..
how much it IS healed we shall learn on monday..

Asking about Caroline is *always* appropriate everywhere, and Nonny would never dream of chastising anyone with a UNO anyway. ;-)

(And I do agree that Bill can do anything with a ThinkPad and was probably just teasing Ian who probably deserves it...)

nonny, in spite of her on screen personna, is a sweetie..
she well knows that there are gaps in my knowledge base wide enough for hannibal to drive the carthagenian army through..
elephants and all..

and, FWIW, i see that the 2373N1U i was using has the same problem..
after a reboot, the taskbar evaporates..

so, later tonight, i plan on trying the fix..

Just arrived home from work, plugged in the T42 and B L A M M - no quick-start icons (despite having made the registry mod)

Also, and this IS wierd, my home page has changed - instead of being my own HTML concoction, it's MSN, and in French!

Back to the drawing board...

here is an interesting occurance..

messing with taskbar on N1U..
"pulled" it up to two rows high..
did "something" by accident and the taskbar would not go back to one row high..
left quickstart in view and did a reboot..
hmm..
quickstart is still there and taskbar STILL won't go back to one row high..!

<sigh>

had to run the recovery and ship it out..

laura reminded me to check the memory so as not to accidently ship it with extra memory in place..
and sure enough there was a 1gig part..
so, pulled it and later powered off the Q1U, inserted the 1gig in the Q1U, restarted..
VIOLA! there is the quickstart still in place on the taskbar..

did not try the reg change..
ian might have done..
the JXU went home to a new owner and the Q1U suddenly is retaining the taskbar settings.. ??!!
