T42 issues

#1 Post by ranchmom5 » Tue Jan 29, 2008 12:11 pm

Hi,

I am having some software troubles with my T42. I have done some troubleshooting but am at a loss as to what to do next. A few days ago it started not shutting down when asked. It would freeze and the only way to get it off was to hold the start button down. At the same time I started having software conflicts. NHC wouldn't load and would simply come up with a notice "NHC has encountered an error and needs to shut down. Send/Don't send a report to Microsoft". This also happened with a program I was running called "Outlook on the Desktop" and a password manager called "Access Manager 2".

I uninstalled NHC and the Outlook program, rebooted, tried a reinstall but always the same thing.

I have been running those programs successfully for several months, so I tried to think of what changes I had made in the past days. (1) I downloaded Google desktop + some gadgets. ( I have sinced uninstalled this) (2) I downloaded and ran "Process Explorer" (3) I downloaded and ran "Autoruns" and the only change I made was I disabled TVTSched (I have since rechecked the TvtSched box in Autoruns)

I have attempted a "system restore" using several different "system checkpoints" but everytime it comes up with "system restore cannot be completed - no changes have been made to the system"

I have also run AVG Free and it gives a clean report. I also run Spyware Terminator and it also shows the system as clean. I have had these two protections on the system for months.

Any suggestions of what to do next? I can't figure out what is causing the problem when everything was working well together previously.

Check the hard disk with the tools in Windows (chkdsk or Tools>Check Now from the Properties of Drive C) , Boot the IBM CD's and run diagnostics. Hopefully you'll find it's purely software problems.

In other words, If chkdsk does not find issues and IBM diag passes, then the computer itself is probably OK.

But 1st thing> Back up any Data that isn't already backed up!!!

Regards

update...

#3 Post by ranchmom5 » Tue Jan 29, 2008 1:09 pm

After posting this I shut down the computer and that reminded me that there were XP updates needing to be installed. It had attempted to install on the last few shut downs...and seemed to have done so, especially this morning - I sat and watched. Anyway, obviously they hadn't taken affect as there it was again. This time, however, it worked and when I rebooted, the Access Manager 2 opened normally. I will load the other 2 programs and see what happens.

Thanks and I will let you know what happens.

That's good news, sounded like it might have been worse!
