If you still have any hair left to pull out, BEWARE!
http://www.paypalwarning.com/

I bet eBay is just trying out in Australia what they can get away with!
If they manage it in Oz, it won't be long before this will apply to the US and UK and EU as well!

eBay really picked the wrong country to trial this.. now the Reserve Bank is weighing in.

The more news stories that I read of this nature, the more confident I feel that this move is just going to tumble faster down the hill than Jack did when he broke his crown.

I'm yet to really decide whether or not to make a submission - reading through most of them, I have little more I could add.

Maybe a little OT, but I didn't realize that eBay was involved with Craigslist:

Ebay's payment changes halted
AUCTION website eBay must freeze controversial plans to simplify payment options for buyers and sellers until the consumer watchdog determines whether the move is anti-competitive.

Latest obnoxious irritation from fleebay:

Dear xxxxx yyyyy,

We would like to tell you about a new security initiative that will help keep your account secure. Later this summer, eBay will begin checking to ensure you are signing in from a computer you have successfully used previously. If you attempt to list an item from a different computer – for example, from a PC you are borrowing in a hotel or library – we will ask you to confirm your identity.

Confirming your identity is simple. When prompted, you can choose an automated call to one of the numbers you have registered with us. If this is not possible, we will provide alternative methods, such as confirmation through Live Chat, or an automated call to a new number. These alternate methods will require you to provide additional information, such as the correct answer to your secret question.

Please take a minute to update your contact information.

To help identity confirmation work quickly for you, we recommend that you have a current phone number and a secret question and answer on file with eBay. If you have a mobile phone, we strongly encourage you to add this to your registration details as a secondary phone number, so that you can confirm your identity while away from your home or business.

Note: You can use the PayPal Security Key to confirm your identity as an alternative to receiving an automated phone call. Order and activate the PayPal Security Key now.

Sincerely,
eBay Trust and Safety Department

That seems to follow along with what my bank has done already. Since I use many different systems, I try to ONLY access any of my critical online accounts from just two or three of them. Early on I received the "challenge" identity confirmations and haven't seen them pop up again. So I guess if I don't delete the cookies the site has dropped on my systems, I'll be okay.

I don't see eBay's invocation of this new login procedure to be too much of a bother. Unless they do something stupid like use the IP address you are logging in from  .

Besides, you are asking for trouble if you use an unknown, potentially unsecure, computer to access any of your online accounts. Ever hear of keyloggers?

Victory to the good guys.

http://www.theage.com.au/news/web/ebay- ... 28313.html
eBay backs down on PayPal changes

eBay has backed down on plans to force all of its users on to PayPal just as the competition regulator looked set to scuttle the move.

The policy would have locked out all payment methods - direct bank deposits, cheques and money orders - except PayPal, which eBay owns, and cash on delivery/pick-up.

eBay's proposals inspired a massive backlash among sellers, who would have been slugged with extra fees because PayPal charges them for each transaction.

Sellers complained eBay users should be given the choice of which payment method to use, rejecting eBay's claims that the decision was purely to protect users from fraud.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, which held a conference in Sydney this week to help it decide whether to allow the policy, looked set to scuttle the plan on the grounds it would lessen competition in the online payments market and deny consumers choice.

But today, before the ACCC could announce its final decision, eBay said it would not go ahead with the plans.
..almost
However, eBay has refused to roll back the first stage of its proposed changes, which required all sellers to at least offer PayPal as one of the payment options.

Here's another controversial move to "discuss" - Money orders and checks as payment options will be gone in about a month's time. However if you scroll up a bit it mentions an enforcement of maximum shipping charges that can be charged for a few categories...

I hope that these categories will be expanded to small electronic items :) . It seems like this new policy may already have made an effect. I was seeing sellers ask for $15 (or more) for a single SODIMM before. Now, in a quick scan of some listings, I see $11 as the highest. At the UPS Ground service that's being declared and the distance involved (NH to CA), that's actually very fair ($10.34). Well, "fair" in the sense that the ebay seller is not grossly inflating the actual shipping cost. If they turn out and use USPS First Class (~$1.80), then that's another issue :) .

E-Bay question...
Is this normal for an unpaid item...
I had bought a MiniPCI wireless N card from e-bay.Used Pay-pal to pay for it and received the card and all was fine. Then the card was locking up the system so i had returned it to the seller for full refund. The seller was great about it.No problems at all.I got the full refund by pay-pay.
Then few days later i get a e-mail from e-bay saying i have a unpaid item mark on my account for this.
I dont know much about it and e-mailed the seller and they said this is normal and e-bay will remove it after 7 days.
But in the e-bay e-mail it says if i don't do anything about it , my account may be suspended.

I'm waiting for e-bay to e-mail me back to see what they say.
Something dont seem right about it.

Yes, I'd rather see honestly higher prices with more reasonable shipping quotes, than how it is now.

Yes, I do believe that I received such a message from eBay when the seller and I agreed to reverse a sale. At first I thought the email was a little suspicious. The auction in question had closed several weeks before and had scrolled off my recent activity list, but some digging around soon revealed that it was probably an automatic notice.

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but I've just had a most interesting experience - the kind that I've expected all along when I first wrote about this many moons ago...and you've guessed it, it was NOT a pleasant one...

Long story short, sold a machine on feebay, auction clearly stated (all of my listings do) that the payment is due within 24 hours. Send an invoice to the buyer. Nothing. Another one after 24 hours. Still nothing. Another one after 48 hours. Nothing. Then I get an email asking me if they could pay by the end of the week with all types of BS excuses. My reply was a very definite "not in this life", reminding them that they won the item in the final seconds of the auction and are now expected to pay for it. They did, an hour later. They also left a negative feedback, right then and there. I replied to it, refunded the money and reported the whole thing to eBay. Will it get me anywhere? Not blooooody likely.

Apart from taking this as a rant (which it most certainly is) take it as a fair warning to what you might encounter while simply looking for money that is owed to you.........thanks a bunch, feebay...

Somewhere in the seller/item setup, there's an option to require immediate payment via paypal, just for this very situation. Worth checking out...

I think that is for BIN now auctions.

The issues I see with Ebay as a buyer (never sold anything there) is that they are trying to get away from the early garage sales theme and auctions in general to a become a fixed priced storefront tilted to the customer (buyers) favor. If you do not do massed listings at fixed prices in virtual stores I don't see how you make much money. The only reason I go to ebay is to get old obsolete stuff (hardware, software, consumables) for my collection at deep discounts from small time sellers who just want the stuff gone. I do use massive specialized sellers for stuff like batteries because they are cheaper then local stores. If I wanted to buy new equipment I would head over to Newegg.com not Ebay.

Immediate payment only works with Buy It Now, not with the auctions that were won by bidding...
