T 30 Wifi Not Working

#1 Post by tonymcclellan » Tue Jan 29, 2008 5:17 pm

I recently bought a T 30 2366 used with the mini PCI wifi/lan combo card. Everything worked fine until I was trying to upgrade the RAM from 256 to 1024. I ordered two cards and installed them, only 512 worked.

Called the company, Data Memory Systems, and they said it appeared I ordered the wrong one and that one shouldnt even work. Well it did work but the wifi wouldnt connect. Reinstalled my 256 card and everything was good until today.

I thought that the second slot was inop so I ordered the "correct" 512 cards and one 1024 card. Got those, installed the 2 512 cards and it recognizes only one. Ok so the second slot is inop. Installed the 1024 and it works (though it supposedly shouldnt) but again wont connect to my wireless network. Put back in a single 512 and same thing. Reinstalled my original 256 and still nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

You would probaby get more help by posting in T3x subforum, not in T4x one.

Yeah, some companies say the 1GB strip won't work. I've got a Kingston 1GB strip in mine and it's fine. My 2nd slot is pretty much defunct at this time...it's a widespread mfg defect on the T30 series.

Some folks are running 2X 1GB strips w/o issue.

Don't know about the issue with the Wi-Fi not working. Maybe somebody else will have a suggestion.

My Wi-Fi card went out and I ended up replacing it. The failure mode was intermittent. Sometimes it worked, other times it didn't.

Put the Type/model in your signature (see mine), so we know what you are talking about.
Quite often the modem/wifi combo cards go on the blink, so find yourself e.g. an Intel 2200BG or 2915ABG, but get one that is NOT provided by IBM (i.e. no IBM FRU number on them).

Read these 2 posts on the ThinkWiKi before you install it:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... twork_card
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... et_devices

As to the RAM, see this post:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=13262

FYI, my T30 runs great with 2x 1GB Samsung generic RAM.

I think my second RAM slot is bad, seems to be a common thing. I will keep the 1GB card if it will work and return all four 512 cards.

Ill check those links, thanks.

My [censored] card says Poor signal, yet the fios signal is right next to it. Also the radio is on but not associated and no matter what I do it cannot find a network. Bad card then? Good memory?

This is what I am looking for: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/ ... f=dp_olp_2

It would tell you if it were an IBM card. You would see the IBM partnumber on it in the form: FRU 73P2801 (for the 2200BG)
FRU 41N2990 (2915BG).
Download this little utility NetStumbler, it will find any network(s) near you.

BTW, either of those cards mentioned would be fine.

You'll need to run the no1802 fix for a stock Intel 2200BG card prior to inserting the card.

Thanks guys. So it can be concluded that the RAM problem and Wifi problems are not related? Just thought it was so weird.

The two used ones from Amazon were ok RBS? I really appreciate all the help.

T, you could always run MemTest86 to verify that the memory is working as it should. It's a bootable CD.

I don't believe the two problems are related, but I'm far from being the expert that others are. My T30 has suffered a WiFi card failure and a memory slot failure and those were not related.

Both the Amazon, and that other card can be used in your T30.
But do read the Thinkwiki articles I referred to in my earlier post.

On my T30 I applied the no1802 hack. Upon cold-boot it also shows the 01C9 error, but just pressing the Esc button turns the machine on and it works fabulously.

Again thanks.

Reading through the no 1802 mod I am wondering what the hell this means Both files will require unzipping before use (use the free 7-Zip instead of WinZip). Once unzipped, the CD version (.iso file) can be burned with Disk Utility or Toast on the Mac, or ImgBurn or Nero on the PC

So burn it to a cd?

I ordered the 2200 from Darntoothysam above. I was going to order a new one anyways later to get faster speeds, but now I had an excuse.

Yes. Once burned, when you boot from that CD there is a small menu offering both programs.

Make sure you burn the .iso file properly. In most CD burning programs there's an option to "Burn Image". It will then popup a file selection box where you will point to the .iso file. Usually it has filtering on for .iso or .cue files.

You cannot drag and drop the .iso file and burn a data CD. It won't work.

So you didnt change the PCI-ID?

Im wondering which step I should do, or do I need to do both. I got the card in but dont have a mini pci adapter to use on my desktop. I also dont have Linux.

NM I think I got it. I just burnt the no1802 onto a disc as an image. I read that the 1802 avoids having to rewrite the pci id which is much easier. We'll see how it goes.

Throw that Roxio crap out, get this free CDBurnerexpress program here: http://cdburnerxp.se/

Read this:
If you have a bootable ISO-image you want to burn (like you get from BartPE or UltimateBootDisc for Windows or the no1802-ISO), you have to use the burn ISO feature. You don't have to enable any boot option there, this will automatically be done.

ONLY run the No-1802 program.
The 01C9 program does NOT work with your card.
You will have the 01C9 error at bootup. Just press the Space bar, followed by the Esc button.

Now WHICH part don't you understand?
