T61P SD card removal and then re-insert issue
T61P SD card removal and then re-insert issue
hi all
I have a strange issue and I am not sure if I not doing something correct or if it's really a bug
I use a 4GB SD card for ready boost. Everything seems to work correctly. However, if I remove the card and then re-insert it, it give me the ding ding that it didn't work
I occastionally have to remove the card to get the photo's off my other SD card from Camera.
In the course of trying to track this issue down and correct it I have tried a variety of methods. I have done 'saftely remove', just removing. I have tried removing 4GB readyboost card and re-inserting it. I have tried same with non-ready boost card. No matter what combination I try, everything works until i remove it. It simply will not see card again until I reboot.
I have found a Microsoft KB on similar issues with SD cards and voltage 'issues' but this update will not install as it says 'does not apply'.
Is there some 'correct' way to take an SD card out and then put it back in and have it work with out having to reboot each time ?

Pardon if it sounds like I'm asking the same thing again, but I want to make sure I understand.
Right click on card, eject it. Re insert it, and it is not detected.
Reboot, then it is detected. Same with another card. Does that pretty much sum it up?
If you right click on 'Computer' and choose 'Manage', then choose 'Disk Management', does the SD card show there similar to the way your hard disk shows?

I can't confirm. I just put an SD card in my T61p for the first time. It loaded a driver and then showed it under "Computer." (Vista). I then tried it six more times and autoplay came up and the it appeared among the drives. I did not eject - just popped it out - and I've never had to eject or safely remove hardware for an SD card on any of the last four PCs I've had with built-in card readers.
It has all the standard Windows updates although there are some Lenovo updates (like Sound Max - I can't imagine it's going to be good) that I'm holding off on.
I like the action on that SD slot - much more positive than I'm used to on Palm devices.

i can insert/install any SD card and it runs without issue. However, when uninstall/remove card and then repeat the laptop fails to be able to 'see' the card until i reboot.
it auditorially acknowledges the insertion of card with 'the device failed to connect' sound. which you can find in control panel under sounds
as i mentioned, changing the sd card to optimize for quick removal from optimize for performance dose help. i might be able install/uninstall a time or two before the 'device fails to connect' sounds and i know i have to reboot to make my SD card usuable again

Occasionally Windows does not enumerate Ricoh chip based card readers correctly. This happens in both XP and Vista. The issue is hard to reproduce, hence my interest. Though it's an uncommon problem, it is fixable.
Try uninstalling the device from Device Manager and restarting the computer. You'll find it under the category 'SD Host Adapters'. You won't need to do anything to get the device to come back. Then try to reproduce the issue.
If the reader is setup correctly, your card should show up as 'Disk 1' in Disk Management.
You can get to both Device Manager and Disk Management by right-clicking on Computer in your Orb or Start Menu.

I have the same issue in my x61s. I'm running vista and the problem is the same before and after installing SP1.
When i boot my computer and insert an SD card, the autoplay window pops up and the card shows up as a drive in my computer. When i remove the card and re-insert it, nothing happens. When i insert the card, i hear the normal windows sound though, which indicates that a new device has been plugged in. It just doesn't show up in my computer or disk management.
I uninstalled the SD driver and re-booted the computer, but it behaves the same way as before.
I have the original intel turbo memory chip in my machine, but i'd just like to use the SD reader to tranfer my photos from my camera. This is very frustrating, as i normally don't boot my computer very often, i just always put it to sleep when it's sitting on my table.

i upgraded to Vista64, issue is still same for me. I cirumvented by buying a $5 usb flash card reader. not sure why we're the only lucky ones, but your right, it's annoying.

Same issue here. It led me to disable ReadyBoost
SD card is not visible all the time when laptop wakes up from both suspend2ram or suspend2disk. ReadyBoost then doesn't use it anymore and then occasionally RD service prevent my laptop to shut down properly, forcing me to hard reboot it ... very very frustating. Nothing changed after SP1, still the same issue.

well, my readyboost function works fine. it's only when i remove and re-insert i have problems.
sounds like it's not a widespread enough problem to have a fix happen, so for now, i will use the usb flash reader for the occasional SD card reading and leave the 4GB in the readyboost slot.

This is my point : my is working fine until I put the laptop in sleep mode : it looks like the SD card reader is "removed" when going to sleep and "re-inserted" when waking up. What happen on yours if you try several suspend2ram<>wakeup cycles ?treydur wrote:well, my readyboost function works fine. it's only when i remove and re-insert i have problems.
