New Version of Perfect Disk Defrag, 40% discount coupon

#1 Post by dfumento » Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:39 pm

Perfect Disk defrag is great and it allows for defragging the system files on reboot.

There is a new version that will defrag VMWare virtual machines for anyone that is interested.

Do you know what this means with respect to the new version?

External defraggers will defrag VM's, but then the VM defragger will do it differently. On top of that, the VM's defragger (if there is one) will do it differently again. I finally gave up and told PD not to defrag the VM machines. Every once in a while, I use VMware to defrag and reduce the size, copy of the VM to another machine and copy it back on to make it contiguous (a few more steps, but I kept it simple here). ... JDH

This is what they sent in the email:

PerfectDisk 2008 for VMware:

Brand new to the family is PerfectDisk 2008 for VMware. With this industry first, VMware users can now defrag their virtual machines without installing a defragmenter inside each machine and without the need to have them running. Another unique feature is its ability to defrag internal disk structures and reclaim free space on the host computer by shrinking the virtual drives. As a VMware Select Technology Alliance Partner (TAP), PerfectDisk for VMware strictly adheres to VMware's recommendations for performance optimization.

Has anyone tried the version to all defrag Virtual Machines? It is **very** expensive (5 times the cost of an upgrade for the version I use). I would like some real world experience before spending that kind of money. Thanks, ... JDH

I use SysInternals' contig utillity for things I need to make contigious. Works great (though it needs free HDD space to work with).

There was never any input that I could see with respect to Perfect Disk 2008 for VMWare. I splurged the money and purchased a copy along with VMWare 6.5 (upgrade from 5.5). There was no upgrade for Perfect Disk (totally different version). An upgrade price was available for the standard version.

So both are installed, but no virtual machines yet (need to import a bunch of machines from VMware 5.5).

However, with respect to defragmenting, it looks like PD2008 will take about 90 minutes for its first pass (normal). Windows Defrag (after having run once completely) takes hours and hours to to a defrag. I cannot tell exactly how long, for the only practical way to do it is to start it up late evening and leave the computer on overnight.

It looks like PD2008 will be amply fast.
