Universal adapter

#1 Post by ThinkPad » Fri Feb 01, 2008 1:15 pm

Im looking at purchasing a universal adapter for my thinkpads and was interested in the Kensington 120 Watt adapter.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0207118010

The specs are listed as

# Specifications:
# Input: 120V/2.2A; 240V, 1.3A; 50/60Hz
# Output: 12 - 16V, 11A; 0.24VDC, 0-6.5A
# 120W maximum

Now I know the thinkpad adapter is 16V, 4.5 A, and I believe 75/90 watts.

So would this universal adapter manage the voltage, wattage and amp to the machine needs? Or would running this adapter hurt my machine given the higher watts and amps?

The laptop only takes what it needs, so 120W is no problem.
You would blow things up though, if you would try a TOO SMALL adapter, like a 12-16V 1A.
Elsewhere on TPF someone just fried a T23 doing that.

You might want to look at the new adapter that lenovo has made:

That is pretty neat. Does that work with older thinkpads or only the newer 20 v models?

never mind just saw the pics which answered my question. Though it is nice, the price is a little on the high side.

So would this Kensington 120 work with the older 16V thinkpads given and amp difference

As long as the output polarity and voltage is identical to what the Thinkpad needs, using a power adapter that is rated for more current than what is spec'ed is perfectly fine.

Thanks for the info. Though I really like the Lenovo adapter, I guess I will have to wait given the price, unless......I browse ebay a bit... :o

My X41 is rated at 3.5 amps, so would my 4.5amp adapter be compatible?
