Empower adapter cables for inflight airplane power for T42p?

#1 Post by DentdHalo » Sat Nov 27, 2004 2:41 am

Hey,

Some of the airlines I fly with use the "Empower" based power adapter for laptops to give them power.

Anyone know of a site where I can buy one for the T4x series of laptops? I did some google searches but most of it comes up for Apple iBooks etc.

Ill be flying in a few weeks so any help would be appreciated.

and igo.com have them.

I have a couple of empower adaptors, they are nice since you can buy the alternate cables for them.

also, you might post a link on Flyertalk.com someone might have an older one for cheap.

Igo adapters

as an FYI...
The IGO TYPE adapters are very sleek, but they are a bit funky with the t42'S.

IGO makes adapters under their own brand, as well as for Targus and Kensington. I have a Targus and a Kensington AC/DC combo adapter. While they do work, they will not power a T42 in hibernation mode, without a battery, or start the PC from a totally off state. If you try this, the battery LED on the T42 will flash yelllow rapidly, and no charging will take place.

If the PC is turned on, or in suspend mode, the unit will charge correctly.

I checked with Targus, and they say that their units are not compatible with the T42 despite the website and packaging listing T series.

Kensington seems to think that they are totally compatible.

Another interesting point, these same adapters work OK with T23's that I have tested.

I finally bought the IBM combo AC/DC adapter and it works flawlessly as expected. The only downside, it is slightly larger and heavier than the IGO/Targus/Kensington type, but not dramatically so. The IBM unit is on sale now for $89, so it may be you best alternative. Also, you will only need to take the one AC/DC unit with you when you travel. My original AC only unit is plugged in permanantely at work.
