fingerprint reader be used to store passwords for websites?

#1 Post by Padhead » Sun Feb 03, 2008 5:22 pm

Can the fingerprint reader be used to store passwords for websites or just logging on to the pc? I want to be able to swipe my fingerprint instead of remember all the passwords. Is that possible?

Look for the Password Manager under Client Security Solution (CSS).

<< Can the fingerprint reader be used to store passwords for websites

As has been said above, yes but...

It depends on what version of CSS you use and whether you use IE or Firefox. I used to use my fingerprint but I had so many problems with a CSS upgrade that I gave up. Look around 'Thinkpad - General HARDWARE/SOFTWARE questions' forum, I think, as there have been a lot of discussion about it over the last year. BTW, I found that it worked with most websites, but not with all.

Thanks for your help. My new T60 showed up today, so I won't be using my T43 (with fingerprint reader) much anymore. Strangely enough the new T60 doesn't have a fingerprinter reader.

When I was ordering it, I went through the model's specifics, it mentioned having the security chip and biometric software, but I inadvertently overlooked the fingerprinter reader was NOT included. DUH LOL.

Buying online blues!

BTW, I have 2 T43 flexviews for sale, both have onsite IBM warranty. One is listed in the Marketplace.

You might call Lenovo to see if they will sell you the fingerprint upgrade. It should then be covered by the system's original warranty.

Alternatively, you could buy it somewhere else, or use a USB fingerprint reader (not handy when traveling). It's so much easier to use really strong passwords with that thing. I should use mine!

I just might do call them. Good point on the warranty. Forgot about that.

I called support last night. I got switched to three different departments. Each asking for all my information.. After the third transfer I hung up on the losers

Next time I will just have someone come in person. saying whatever it takes to make that happen.

I still can't figure out how to turn login with the just the fingerprint reader. Anyone know this works?

I went to the Client security software. then advance pull down menu, then "reconfigure security settings" . I had to erase my existing settings password, but now the system uses fingerprint to logon.

However i still havent figured out how to get it to use the fingerprint to login into websites.

If you are using IE, then you should be receiving a prompt after manually entering your user name and password at a protected Web site. The prompt should say, "Would you like to save this Web site with Password Manager?" Click "Yes", then select the folder in the Password Manager window that appears. After that, you choose a name for the Web site entry that will appear in the list of protected sites within Password Manager.

The next time you visit that Web site, you should be prompted for your fingerprint.

If you are NOT receiving these prompts under IE, then you may have a corrupt or faulty installation of Fingerprint Software, Password Manager and/or CSS.

If you use firefox. The new client security software has the plug-in for firefox but it's broken and can be fixed easily. There is a discussion titled "Password Manager and Firefox crash [Solution]" in this forum.

It works the same way as USSS pointed out in the post above.

After I used the fingerprint authentication for a while I went back to the master password method in firefox since I always open a bunch of authentication-required websites at the same time(webmails and such) and the plug-in doesn't always prompt me for the fingerprint for every website.

Thanks. I use IE, so I will give it another try using password manager.

As an aside, the "Type-and-Transfer" tool is rather quirky and does not always "find" the text-entry field. However, I haven't tried to use it since the last couple of updates to Password Manager, so it's possible its functionality has improved.

But using the semi-automated response to the prompts as described in my earlier post is probably the easiest, most efficient method of populating the Password Manager list of protected Web sites.
