A30 FAN OFF Error Message
Alright I'm new here, so here goes.. I'm a computer tec, I can (blindfolded) build a desktop system from scratch but quiet honestly the innerds of my thinkpad leave me in a cold sweat.
Very recently My LCD stopped working. I very carefully (and I mean VERY) took it apart , going so far as to label each screw with a different color etc..
Ok here goes.. I'm not a klutz I wore a static strap I replaced the screen with one I obtained from a scrapped unit on ebay and reassembled the system...Every screw back into its corresponding place I fired it up.....
It booted .. but I got a FAN OFF .... Press F1 to continue.. If I press F1 you of course enter the cmos... there doesnt seem to be any way in the cmos to "start" the fan....
Moreover... if you press Esc, you bypass the message and the system starts and seems to run quiet normally.. I had it up and running for an hour....HOWEVER I cant feel any heat or air comming from the fan exhaust.
I took a chance and bought a "new" referbished fan unit on ebay and replaced what I thought was a "dead" fan...... but the error message is still there to mock me..
Has anyone had this happen to them, and if so how does one, (short of replacing the board in what is now considered an obsolete machine), rectify the situation?
Regards
Byron

Possible solutions:
1. Update your BIOS to the latest version.
2. Gently blow air thoroughly on your system via an air blower.
If none works then replace the CPU first, if still no go then replace the system board.

A30 Fan Off Error Message
Ok..........
so far I have replaced the fan (twice)
I have downloaded and installed the latest bios
I replaced the CPU
Message still mocks Me..
I am negotiating for yet another A30 lets see what happens when I change the LCD. The connection for the LCD is very very close to the fan connection...
I wish I had a microscope to see if somehow I did manage to damage the board, even though I honestly took every precaution and wore a static strap.

Personally, I'd let it run and see what happens. My opinion is that the board is shot. If that's the case, there's not a lot more damage that you can possibly do.
And, that's the only way you'll find out whether the fan actually does something/anything.
Good luck.
