Now that Ad-Aware 1.06 is no longer supported...
... what anti-spyware program do people recommend? Looks like Ad-Aware 2007 may be bloated and somewhat unstable, and is always running in the background (requesting updates).
I don't mind paying for something good, although the free version of Ad-Aware always seemed to do the job.

I use ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which combines firewall, anti-spyware, and Kaspersky anti-virus. My ststems are set to update the anti-spyware and anti-virus definitions hourly.

I was using Zone Alarm Suite 6.5 on the T21 (had tried the early
7 release which was bad) then went up to the latest 7.x but it used too much in memory and resources for me.
After ZA reported what it thought was a virus and after I closed
the dialog the amount of memory in use shot up drastically
but never went back down. The "module" used stuck itself
in memory.
My only reason for moving up to ZASuite 7.x was because 6.5
kept having problems downloading the antivirus databases (always time out) but the spyware database updating never had a problem.
Although it was not running as the primary antispyware I had
Ad-Aware and I also recently tried the 2007 version. Yes it is
very bloated compared to the previous SE Personal.
Still trying to find the right mix I'm now using Sunbelt's CounterSpy. Firewall is Sunbelt [Kerio] Personal Firewall.
Antivirus is AVG Free.

Looks like we have a winner here!BillP wrote:AdAware 1.06 is still supported. However now if you are running the Personal Edition, you must download the weekly updates manually. Look for new definitions files every Monday - hey that's today!
I think this is the best short-term solution for me right now. If/when they stop having these updates, I'll be revisiting this issue again.

Running XP Pro with only half a gig of RAM will do that.marcdw wrote:I was using Zone Alarm Suite 6.5 on the T21 ... then went up to the latest 7.x but it used too much in memory and resources for me.

I used Ad-Aware (paid version) for a long time on both my computers. They got greedy with the new version and further I didn't care for the new version.
So I downloaded and ran Windows Defender as an experiment. I was surprised (pleasantly) at just how good it is. Works, doesn't use any resources to speak of, runs and updates silently in the background, and free. I am still using it and have no regrets.
Windows Defender arose from a company that Microsoft purchased, and it seems to be a decent product.

So the following info at Lavasoft support is incorrect?BillP wrote: That's incorrect - I updated my 1.06 installation manually last Monday. The latest definitions file is SE1R217 dated Feb 4, 2008.

No, the #9 post in that thread indicates that definition files will continue to be available just as I said. AdAware Personal, Professional, and Enterprise all use the same definitions file. For AdAware Personal you have to go to the Lavasoft site and retrieve the file yourself. Not a problem for me but I guess that might be too much work for some.goofyGAguy wrote:So the following info at Lavasoft support is incorrect?BillP wrote: That's incorrect - I updated my 1.06 installation manually last Monday. some things in the systray.
At one point I thought maybe I should just turn off on-access
security software to free up some memory. I can still practice
safe computing via on-demand scans and other precautions
I have in place.
Maybe.
Marc
Edit: For the fun of it I turned off the resident modes of
CounterSpy and AVG Free (email scanning service is still on
though) and man apps are just speeding along.
I'm gonna have to work out a compromise here.
Go to http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ and on the right side of the screen you'll see a download button for AdAware SE virus definitions.
My thanks to BillP for letting me know that the definitions are still available
