R61 7732 CTO/Amber light on Ethernet port

#1 Post by bvaught » Mon Feb 04, 2008 1:20 pm

I am currently having issues with the Intel 82566mm Gigabit network adapter on my Lenovo R61 7732 CTO. There is an amber indicator light on the Ethernet port that will not turn off. The network connection Icon on the windows toolbar shows that the network cable is unplugged when a Ethernet cord is properly connected to the port.

I have tried the following steps to fix this issue.

1. Verified that the network cable is working on another computer.
2. Uninstalled and reinstalled the device driver.(looked for the latest version of the driver.)
3. Created a new network connection.
4. Tried various Lan settings in bios
5. Booted up in safe mode to uninstall/reinstall the driver.
6. Pulled the cmos battery.
7. Pulled the out the laptop battery and the ac power adapter cable.

My intuition tells me that the port is cooked. I am really hoping that I am wrong since the device is intergraded with the motherboard.

I am going crazy and it looks like it is going to be a short trip!

Welcome to the forum, first of all!

Here's how I would go about it: try to download or borrow a copy of recent Linux "live" distro (my suggestion would be Kubuntu 7.10), and see whether your LAN works under that.

Also, check your BIOS settings-I'm not familiar with your machine, but there might be a possibility that LAN has been turned off there.

If both of these turn to be a no-go, you have an issue with that port, and hopefully, warranty left.

Keep us informed.
