I’m receiving my X40 on Monday. I’m wanting to add memory and looking at some generic options to save money. I’ve never bought memory before and wonder about making a mistake with what I order.
What are the specific items I need to pay attention to? Some seem obvious, but maybe there are some things in need to think about. Any info would be appreciated.
My X40 config is… 23868WU

Memory upgrade listed as:
1GB PC2700 CL2.5 DDR SDRAM SODIMM
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... &cntry=840
A couple options I was looking at:
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4158153
http://search-desc.ebay.com/1GB-PC2700- ... ortorderZ1
Do these two option look like they will work??? I guess they look ok to me, but maybe I’m missing something..
Thanks.. R
Memory upgrade for X40...
You just made a substantial investment in a new IBM laptop now you want to save a few dollars on questionable memory???
Cheap memory is just that! The Memory Chips on the Memory Modules (SIMMs. DIMMs. SODIMMs, etc.) are sold in many different quality levels.
Premium Memory Modules use the best quality Chips that are matched for performance. The cheaper the memory, generally the lower the quality of Chips used on them. Cheap Memory is more likely to have intermittent problems and bad memory is a major cause on instability in Windows!
The brand name on the Chips is no guarantee of anything. Every Chip maker sells Chips in several qualities.
If you look around on the Web you may be able to find REAL IBM Memory at a good price. Make sure that you check with the seller to guarantee that it's the real thing. There are many vendors who claim to be selling IBM Memory that is just "IBM compatible"! The memory should have an IBM label like the one in your X40.
I bought an IBM 512MB SODIMM for my X31 for $145.00 USD last month. Memory prices go up and down so you may want to wait a month or so. A lot of companies have sales at the end of December or in January.
Micron's Crucial brand of memory sold on their web site is also a good source, so is Mushkin's premium brand.
Good luck!
