R50 memory problem

#1 Post by AndyKH » Wed Feb 06, 2008 11:25 am

I just installed a 1GB module in my R50 - a 512 module was installed when I purchased it. The previous module I bought (Kingston value ram) didn't even allow my PC to post, so I searched for some guaranteed compatible ram and found Corsair Value Select 1GB module (VS1GSD333). This is the one suggested when searching for R50-1829 compatible memory on the corsair website.

I just installed it, but the thinkpad now starts to lock completely up once - the two last times already during boot at the user slection screen. I know that I'm probably dealing with bad RAM here, but could the explanation be something else?
Is there info that might suggest that R50s have problems with a 1GB module in the expansion slot? Should I mount the new module in the standard slot and move the old 512 module in the expansion slot, or should I just remove the 512 module altogether? I'm at work right now, and I didn't have time to try these configurations out after I noticed the errors, but when I get home I will try out any suggestion from you before I start experimenting.

Any advice will be appreciated

Sounds like a bad stick to me. I haven't heard of R52s having problems with 1GB sticks, I'd exchange it. It can't hurt to try it in the other slot. You can always put it back.

Thanks for the reply.

Could it be that the north bridge can't drive 32 chips? I know the 1 GB module contains 16 chips, and I think the existing 512 MB module is 16 chips also.

Well, I'l try to uninstall the 512 meg´module and see what happens.
