For a couple of years, my LCD screen has had a red tinge to it when first turned ON. After a couple of minutes it would be stable with good colors.
Now, when I turn it ON, before the boot up is complete, the LDC screen goes black (the little moon stays OFF indicating that it does not go into hibernation). The harddisk continues to function to complete the boot up. If I hit Fn-F4 the Thinkpad goes into hibernation (the little moon lights up) and when I hit Fn-F4 again to bring it out of hibernation (the little moon turns off), the LCD screen comes back up with the red tinge and after a few seconds the background lighting starts to flicker and the screen goes black again (the little moon stays OFF indicating that it does not go into hibernation). I can repeat this scenario over and over with the Fn-F4 sequence to force it into hibernation and then out of hibernation with the same results.
Seems to me either the back light or back light power supply is bad or there is a loose connection.
Is this something easily fixed??

First of all, welcome to the forum!
Your LCD has a bad backlight (CCFL tube) in it, and it's not an easy replacement. Forum member jamiphar offers this service with warranty on his work, so you may contact him for more details. He had replaced the backlight on one of my A31p laptops, and it's the best screen I've ever had, and I've owned hundreds of ThinkPads...
